Section C – Instructions to learners

Task instructions:

This assessment comprised of two parts- Part A and Part B

Part A

In this part of the assessment task, you are required to prepare a report recommending the type of server environment you would setup for the client brief. A report template is provided for reference which you can use to create your report.

In this part you need to create an installation and configuration report that include details of the operating system, system requirements, protocols, server roles, folder structure, access permission and handling of user data and backup methods.

You will need to complete the following tasks:

  1. Provide a short overview of the server environment you are recommending and why this environment best suits client needs. You are required to detail the technical specification of hardware, Software & Operating system and compatibility issues involved. For the environment described above document the following information:
    1. operating system
    2. server role/s
    3. disk partition structure
    4. server protocols installed
    5. domain names
    6. Server IP addresses.
  2. Document a preliminary folder structure for the server and indicate who will have access to which folders.
  3. Document any security issues and concerns.
  4. Develop user instruction and documentation that provides the end users /staff instructions to help them be more successful with your implementation. You may include step-step instruction on how to access the server, how to connect to server, Ip address, network drives that they have access to and information of any deployment and down time expectations. Also include the Server status and e-wastage Strategies.
  5. Obtain client feedback and approval.

Part B-Portfolio observation task.

In this part, you will need to set up a small network of a Windows server using VMware workstation Pro 16/VMware workstation17 for the client brief provided. This part will be the implementation of the installation and configuration report you created in Part A. You are also required to test server functionalities and finalize documentation and clean-up worksite. The PRT SCREEN function can be used to produce your screenshots of the installation, configuration, and testing of your server.

For this task, you will need to set up a small network of a Windows server 2019 using VMWare workstation Pro 16/ VMware workstation 17.

Your assessor will observe your progress on the completion of each of the following tasks:

  1. Install and configure the server operating system with the following specifications:
    1. Install and configure the server as a primary domain controller.
    2. Install AD and DHCP roles.
    3. Configure the server as a DHCP server with at least 10 reserved IP addresses specified in the exclusion range.
  2. Set up the Windows desktop client IP address to be 192.168.10.20 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
  3. Set the default gateway as 192.168.10.2 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
  4. Connect the workstation to the domain and test for connectivity.
  5. Check for and if necessary, install any security patches or system updates to the Windows Server environment.
  6. Using the server you created in above perform the following tasks.
    1. Create two user groups. One called “Designers” and one called “Admin Staff”.
    2. Create three user accounts. Three users in the “Designers” group and three users in the “Admin Staff” group.
    3. Test that the users can access the network from a workstation.
  7. Connect a printer to the server and share it with all users and groups on the network.
  8. Create three folders on the server with names--“Design Files”, “Client & Staff Data”, and “Company Documentation Templates” with the following security restrictions:
    1. Only members of the “Designers “group can access the” Design files folder”
    2. Only members of the “Admin Staff” group can access the “Client & Staff Data folder”
    3. Both the “Designers” and “Admin Staff” can have access to the “Company Documentation Templates”
    4. To these 3 folders all the users must have a mapped folder.
    5. Set a quota of 200MB for each user.
  9. Test and validate any changes or additions to the server environment.
  10. Backup and Restore data from server and Desktop Computers to new systems accordingly.
  11. Trouble shoot server and any network failures by carrying out performance testing using utility tools and seek feedback on server performance

Learners are required to correctly answer all questions to a satisfactory level for each question of this assessment task to be given a satisfactory result by the assessor. If this is not achieved on the first attempt, then an opportunity to resubmit is allowed.

Once learners have completed all the questions, the assessment must be uploaded and submitted along with the signed assessment coversheet via Brightspace.

If a supplied answer is incorrect or requires further information, the learner will be requested to correct the issues and resubmit the assessment via Brightspace.

Section D – Conditions for assessment

Conditions:

Learner to complete and attach Assessment Submission Cover Sheet to the completed Assessment Task.

This assessment is to be completed individually.

  • You must answer all the questions satisfactorily to be satisfactory in this task.
  • You may complete the assessment task inside or outside the class hours.
  • If not successful within the enrolment period as per Holmesglen assessment procedure, you will be requested to resubmit within seven days of receiving feedback. You are permitted two re submissions per assessment task.
  • This is an individual task; however, you are required to get information, feedback and ideas from your assessor, peers and industry to help complete the assessment.
  • It is expected all documents will be completed and submitted electronically but if this is not possible, contact your teacher prior to the due date to arrange an alternative method of submission.
  • You can appeal an assessment decision according to the Holmesglen Assessment Complaints and Appeals Procedure.
  • If you feel you require special allowance or adjustment to this task, please discuss with your assessor at least one week prior to the due date for this assessment. This assessment is to be completed individually.
  • Learners may use the internet for research purposes. All answers must be in the learner’s own words.
