Problem 2: Deflection Calculation
Determine the maximum deflection of the beam loaded as shown in figure below using Conjugate beam method. Consider El as constant. A is a fixed support, and C is a pin support. There is an internal hinge/pin at B. Also draw the deflected shape of the beam. The value of P must be calculated using your student ID and the following equation:
P (kN) = (?Student ID) - C]/4
Round result UP to the nearest whole number (see example below)
The value of C is given in following table.
For example if your student ID is 212345678, then sqrt(212345678) 14572.086; C from the table for student = ID started with 212 = 14520. So, P =(14572.086-14520)/4= 13.02 and rounded up to nearest whole number. Hence, P= 14 kN. This is an example only, students must use the appropriate P based on the above calculation using their own student ID number for all problem 2 calculations.
Mark distribution:
Correct P value: 0.5 mark
BMD of real beam: 1 mark
Conjugate beam loading: 1 mark
Reactions of conjugate beam: 2 marks
Location of maximum deflection: 3 marks
Maximum deflection & its direction: 2 marks
Deflected shape of the beam: 0.5 mark
