Problem 1: Influence lines
Figure 1 below shows a sectional view of a bridge girder spanning in a creek in regional Victoria. A concrete deck of width 3.5 m is resting on two identical girders.
Previous analysis has identified two moving load case scenarios as the design loads:
Load Case 1: A truck with the wheel loads as shown in the figure below
Load Case 2: A 3 kPa uniformly distributed load (UDL) with a length of 4 m.
Note that the truck and UDL can travel in either direction along the centre of the deck. Accordingly, the load will be carried equally by the two girders.
Assume load factor of 1.5 on both moving loads and ignore the self-weight of the girder and deck.
Using influence line diagrams, calculate the following:
- Maximum bending moment at C under both load cases 1 and 2 (For load case 1: show at least 4 trials)
- Absolute maximum bending moment in the bridge girder due to the truck loading (Load case 1)
