Assignment 1 Outline and Guidelines

Assignment One - Theory & Practice

Assignment 1 Overview

Each assessment task for this unit builds on each other to form a resolved interactive design.

The interactive piece will be a creative work that will interpret a written poem, sometimes referred to as a narrative or text, that you choose yourself. You may choose a poem that is written in another language but must be able to explain it to your lecturer in English so they are able to understand your assignment.

Your final projects developed throughout Assessments 1, 2 & 3 will consist of at least 2 interactive pages (more can be negotiated with your tutor if necessary).

Weekly Exercises (Assignment 1: Technical Tutorials and Assessable Exercises)

Students are required to undertake weekly technical exercises (3 in total outlined in the Assessment folder on CloudDeakin) to ensure you develop an understanding of basic HMTL & CSS from the outset.

Follow the instructions for each exercise then combine and compress 2 x html files plus images into a.zip folderand upload to CloudDeakin by end of Week 3

You should do one exercise per week so you can spread out the work. It will also give you a good idea of some of the limitations of HTML and CSS and your abilities.

These exercises are to be undertaken in your own time and count toward your grade.

Report & In-seminar Review

Your report is to be reviewed with your tutor in week 3 to ensure you are on the right track. It is compulsory that you do this and is a graded component of your assignment. You will refine your report based on feedback and submit to CloudDeakin by the due date.

Report contents(500 words)

Using the readings and lectures as a guide, write a written report on the following:

Research poems and choose one that means something to you that you will use for this project.

Identify the metaphors, messages and themes in the chosen poem and summarise.

Find 2 examples of creative projects that tell a story using different methods of interactivity and answer the following questions:

Who do you think the audience is and why?

What strategies have been used to engage the audience? eg. choice of imagery, colours, fonts, methods of interactivity, etc.

Include 2 screenshots of each website to refer to.

Define who your audience is going to be.

What type of person are they?

What age group do they belong to?

What are their interests and why would they want to engage with your project?

Identifyvery simpleinteractive methods used to engage audiences and answer the following:

What methods would be useful in engaging the intended audience in your project (such as basic image rollover, colour change or removal, or highlighting of particular words?

What makes them want to interact with them (how do you identify that the particular component should be clicked on, etc)?

What reward do they get through this interaction (do they find out more information or does the image change make them a question or react emotionally)?

Some simple examples of website designs using simple images, colours, shapes and simple interactivity.
