Assignment 2: TESOL
Length and/or format:2,500 words
ASSESSMENT 2: TEACHING PORTFOLIO
Due date:Sunday 20th of October, 2023 by 11pm
Choose a unit from any KLA for a particular Stage or year group which will allow you to demonstrate your understanding and application of appropriate, contextualised EAL/D pedagogies for a mainstream class that includes EAL/D learner/s. Plan a lesson sequence (6-8 lessons) which demonstrates appropriate pedagogical strategies to support EAL/D learners to meet the curriculum language demands.
Purpose:This assessment task is designed to assess your understanding of this units content and your ability to apply it to practical teaching situations through the use of appropriate curricular documents such as the EAL/D Learning Progression (and other EAL/D related resources available with the Australian Curriculum) and the ESL Scales.
Your assignment should include anintroductory sectionwhich clearly identifies:
the Stage, KLA and topic/theme you have chosen for the Unit.
where the EAL/D student/s in the class is/are on the EAL/D Learning Progression for each of the skills areas based on evidence.
outcomes and indicators that will be the focus for your EAL/D student/s (Make sure these are consistent with where the student/s is/are on the EAL/D Learning Progression)
key aspects of language/image that your EAL/D student/s will need to develop control over (orally and in reading and writing and multimodal representation) to access the unit content. Justify your answer using research.
Your assessment task should include anoverview sectionwhich provides:
a clear and brief explanation (three or four sentences or dot points for each lesson) of what the teacher will do and what the students will do in each lesson. This overview should demonstrate the involvement of Register Continuum and for building academic language mastery and semiotic knowledge within your Unit. (You can present this in table form if you wish)
detailed lesson plans for two lessons from the Unit using the ACU lesson template on Canvas with all sections fully completed. These lessons do not have to be sequential but you must clearly indicate where in the Unit sequence they occur. Choose lessons that will allow you to best demonstrate your understanding of the theoretical and practical content.
In both detailed lesson plans:
give a clear description of the teaching strategies, quality texts used (e.g.: picture books) and learning experiences.
identify what functional discourse aspects (relevant to your chosen Unit topic) would be developed in each lesson.
indicate how you would assess student learning against the ESL scales outcomes and indicators.
provide an annotated bibliography of any sources you mention in your lesson plans.
Length and/or format:2,500 words or equivalent (excluding outcomes and indicators and model texts).
Assessment criteria:
designs a unit which clearly demonstrates depth of understanding and application of the theories and techniques covered in EDLA618
employs highly appropriate teaching strategies and learning experiences in relation to identified ESL Scales outcomes and indicators and/or descriptors from the EAL/D Learning Progression, the identified EAL/D learners and to SLA theory
in each lesson identifies functional grammar aspect/s which are highly appropriate to the language demands of the Unit taught and the needs of identified EAL/D learners using ACU lesson plan template.
makes correct use of relevant TESOL concepts
demonstrates a high level of academic writing
employs correct APA 7 referencing in text and reference list
Note: I will send all the literature information, including lesson template to the expert to do this assignment. Please let me know when the expert is ready. Thanks.
