  1. Identify some of the WHS issues related to working in an engineering drawing office (refer to such online resources as Workplace Safe Tasmania), present your findings in a report (Minimum of 250 words, double spaced, no font heights above 11 points, and NO comic sans MS).
  2. Examine AS1100.101-501 (that is all five parts) and list the sections that directly relate to engineering drawings.
  3. Access a copy of the Australian Standard AS1100.101-1992(R2014) and with reference to the below list of symbols, definitions, and acronyms, research and document what the acronyms mean, what the acronym for the highlighted element is, symbol definition, and relevant symbol for the written description. Upon completion, prepare a reference list of the tables and/or sections referred to in order to answer the questions.

Assessment 2 – Procedure and compliance

  1. Check the included set of drawings against the drawing register and confirm if all the drawings are correct as per the register, if there are any discrepancies please identify and where required, the correct drawing will be made available to you for download at a later date.
  2. The drawing set 160206-S01 ? S12 provided, covers the proposed structural requirements for a proposed residence. The drawings cover critical information such as:
    • General and specific notes
    • Details
    • Sections
    • Plans
    • Connections
Please nominate what drawings (drawing number) appear in which category nominated in the above list.
  3. The drawing 160206-S05 Ground Floor Plan (Scale 1:100) denotes many structural elements, including the area of concrete slabs, using a scale ruler, measure the extent of the 100mm thick concrete slabs and give an approximate total area in square meters. This is to also be performed for the 120mm and 200mm concrete slabs respectively

Assessment 3 – Engineering Symbols and Title

  1. With reference to the Australian Standard AS1100.101-1992 (R2014), sketch (ruled) some of the common symbols used in engineering plans for the following:
    • fillet weld
    • Universal Beam: 250 UB 37.3
    • finish surface of 1.6 roughness value applied
    • M16 bolt – plan view
    • M16 bolt – side view (conventional representation)
    • centreline in circles
    • internal thread – plan view
    • example of a third angle projection
    • third angle projection symbol
    • three examples of geometric tolerance symbols
  2. With reference to the Australian Standard AS1100.101-1992 (R2014), what information is found on a Title Block that might be useful to a draftsperson? A minimum of five examples are to be researched and presented here, either in bullet point format or a short report (Maximum of 250 words, double spaced, no font heights above 11 points, and NO comic sans MS).

  2. Research the attached drawing set 160206-S01 ? S12 and for the following structural elements, please complete the size (mm), material composition, and what drawing you sourced this information from.
    • SF1
    • EB1
    • B2
    • C1
    • J2
    • R2
    • RB1

    • RW1
    • BP1
    • Masonry Anchor M20
    • BW1
    • Steel Plate Generally (No size required)
  3. In the drawing set 160206-S01 ? S12, go to the drawing ‘Ground – General Arrangement Plan’, record it’s drawing number, locate the two section markers and record what drawing they refer to and what scale the two sections are drawn at, go to the new sheet which the sections appear on, briefly describe what Section1 is showing.
On the section drawing sheet, find the detail reference and record what drawing it appears on, go to the referred drawing and confirm if it contains the required detail information, if it does not, locate the correct drawing and record the drawing number in conjunction with the general detail name and scale.
  4. In the drawing set 160206-S01 ? S12, go to the drawing ‘Level 1 – Floor Framing Plan’, record it’s drawing number, locate the note about control and expansion joints and record what drawing they refer to, go to the new sheet which the details appear on, briefly describe what a control joint is, in conjunction with the general detail name and scale.
