MGNT110 Assessment 4: Spring 2023

Overview

For this assessment, we will be expanding on our idea of reflection that we did for Assessment 1. This will involve you undertaking a reflection used the Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988). Further information about this (with examples) is available here. However, you are using this reflective cycle to agree or disagree with one of the essay statements listed below.

Essay Questions

You are to choose one of the following statements:

The use of technology in the surveillance of workers leads to greater productivity

The concepts of scientific management are obsolete and do not appear within contemporary organisations

Discipline is a core part of organisations and is only used to ensure workers are docile and cooperative for their own good

All businesses should strive for efficiency regardless of the impact on workers

Political games do not exist in organisations as managers are rationally aligned to the organisational goals

From here, choose whether you agree or disagree with the essay statement. This will form the basis on how you reflect on it.

Selecting an Experience

For this assessment, an experience is an event or observation that has occurred in the past involving other people that has impacted you in some way (for example in Assessment 1 the experience was Weeks 1-6 of MGNT110) This may include:

Events that have happened at your job

Events that have occurred in your social life

This subject/group-work (or other subjects!)

Anything else that you can classify as an experience defined above

The idea is for you to use a reflection of a past event to support whether you agree/disagree with your chosen question.

Undertaking your reflection

Please use the following prompts to help with how you use the Gibbs Reflective model (this will also serve as the outline of your final assessment)

Description: what is the event? What happened?

Feelings: What were you feeling during this situation? How did this impact the experience? How do you think other people were feeling?

Evaluation: what worked/did not work in that situation?

Analysis: this is the most important question as this is where you will link your experience to justify how you agree/disagree with the essay question. Within this question, it is expected that you link ideas back to the lecture content using UOW Harvard.

Conclusion: what did you learn from your experience? How does this relate back to the essay question?
