Workbook 1

Module 1, Week 1 questions (5 marks):

Total word count for Module 1 questions: 120-130 words

Mina works for a large company and has been asked by their employer to conduct a study investigating staff satisfaction and wellbeing in their workplace, following several staff resignations in previous months.

Mina realises that either a quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods approach could be taken to understand this research question. Mina asks you for your suggestions.

Which approach (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods) do you suggest Mina take? Is this approach experimental or non-experimental? (1 mark)

It is suggested that Mina takes a mixed methods approach to understand staff satisfaction and well-being in the workplace. This will ensure that she has a multifaceted and more comprehensive understanding of the research question when compared to using just quantitative or qualitative methods. This approach necessitates a non-experimental design, as there is no independent variable, and responses will be based on individual participant answers.

In line with the research approach you have suggested for Mina, briefly outline a study that Mina could conduct. (2 marks)

Firstly, Mina could conduct a questionnaire by administering a series of survey questions to all employees of the company to identify patterns and the factors influencing staff satisfaction and wellbeing n within the company. This data can then be

What are the strengths of adopting this research approach for answering Minas research question? (1 mark)

What are the disadvantages of this research approach for answering Minas research question? (1 mark)

Module 2, Week 2 question (5 marks):

With reference to Milroy et al (2022) and either the Men, Hearts and Mind study OR the ERLI study, in what ways were culturally safe research processes applied in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

(Answer in 120-130 words)

Milroy et al. (2022) emphasized the importance of culturally safe research processes in studies involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. For example, in the Men, Hearts and Mind study, researchers prioritized building trust and rapport with Indigenous communities through meaningful engagement and consultation. They ensured that research protocols respected cultural protocols and values, such as obtaining proper permissions from community leaders and elders. Additionally, the study employed Indigenous researchers and community members as partners throughout the research process, facilitating culturally appropriate data collection methods and interpretation. Similarly, in the ERLI study, researchers implemented culturally safe practices by involving Indigenous stakeholders in study design, data collection, and analysis, fostering a collaborative and respectful research environment that honored Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. These approaches promoted cultural safety by recognizing and valuing Indigenous cultures, knowledge systems, and lived experiences within the research process.

Week 3

Question 1. Below are a few 'mock' survey questions where the wording is problematic (Part a, b, and c are worth 1 mark each)

a) On a scale of 1 to 5, how would you rate the School of Psychology at Western Sydney University and your Advanced Research Methods subject?

Explain why the wording of this question is a problem for survey design?

This question is problematic as it is a double barreled question and should be and should be posed as 2 separate questions to accurately capture responses and ensure validity. For example, some people may not like the ARM subject but like the school of psychology.

b) How often and for how long do you exercise each week?

Explain why the wording of this question is a problem for survey design?

This is a double barreled question which asks for both how often and how long the participant exercises in a single question. This may make it confusing for individuals to answer and also affects validity and makes it difficult to accurately understand the nature of the responses.

c) On a scale of 1-3 rate how much you enjoy drinking coffee (where 1 = I enjoy it somewhat, 2= I enjoy it a lot, and 3= I enjoy coffee more than most things)

Explain why the wording of this question is a problem for survey design?

The problems with the wording of this question stems from its leading nature which assumes that the participant enjoys drinking coffee, not taking into account the fact that they may not drink coffee at all. Furthermore, it is positively worded which may lead to participants choosing more favorable responses due to lack of otherwise, therefore affecting the validity of the responses.

Question 2 (2 marks)

Dr Liu is developing a scale on Altruistic behaviours in adolescents. The scale has 16 items. Dr Liu runs a reliability analysis and notes that Cronbach's alpha is 0.7 overall. Dr. Liu also notes that 2 items on the scale have Cronbach's alpha values of 0.4 and 0.45 respectively, and if these items are removed, the overall Cronbach alpha for the Altruistic Behaviours Scale would increase

Do you think Dr Liu should remove those two items? Explain Why or Why not? (answer in approximately 50 words)

Dr. Liu should remove the two items that have low Cronbach's alpha values to ensure that the overall reliability of the data is improved. The lower score of those two items implies that they were not reliable and therefore affect the overall consistency of the data.

Week 4

Below are the Workbook 1 Activities for this week. There are three questions to answer.1) Dr. Liu runs a bivariate correlation between chocolate consumption and wellbeing which yields a Pearon's r value of -0.96 and is statistically significant. Which of the following statements are TRUE?(hint: more than one answer is true. Note down all the options that are TRUE) (1 mark)a) The observed correlation between variables is negative TRUEb) There is a small amount of negative covariance between variables relative to random error FALSEc) A high score on one variable is associated with a low score on the other TRUEd) This correlation is useful for predictive purposes TRUEe) Points on a scatterplot would resemble a straight line TRUE2) Give two reasons why it would be important for Dr. Liu to plot the relationship between chocolate consumption and wellbeing on a scatter plot? (2 marks; answer in 50 words or less)

a scatterplot helps visualize the relationship between variables, confirming linearity and identifying outliers or anomalies which could affect correlation interpretation and further analysis.

3) Before conducting a bivariate regression analysis, Dr Liu performs a bivariate correlation analysis? Explain why it is important to conduct a bivariate correlation before a bivariate regression ? (2 marks; answer in 50 words or less)

allows understanding the strength and direction of the relationship between variables, helping determine if regression is appropriate and informative.

Week 5

1. Mae is deciding what regression analysis to perform and asks you what the difference is between standard multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression? In your own words, explain the difference between these types of regression analyses? (3 mark, answer in 50 words or less)

2. There is an election at Hogwarts School for the Headmaster position and Harry is conducting research about how students rate the candidate Albus Dumbledore for the position of Headmaster, on the dimensions of likeability, clarity of proposed school rules, and how much they agree with those school rules. The tables below show the SPSS output from his analysis. What statistic in the below SPSS output gives you the overall percentage of variance in the DV that could be explained by the IVs in the model? What is the value of that statistic? (2 marks)

Week 6

Below is the Workbook 1 activity for this week

In Part 3 of the Module lecture, Associate Professor Mattock demonstrated a one-way between subjects ANOVA and discussed interpretation of the output. Your task is to write up these results in APA format. The self-directed learning activities this week and your Hills textbook will also assist you in completing this task.

For ease of reference, the one-way ANOVA output from Part 3 of the module is collated in this document:

Question 1 (5 marks):

Write-up the results of the one-way between subjects ANOVA in APA format (approx word count 150-180 words)

Week 7

As we reach the half-way point in this subject, it is a good moment for you to take stock of your learning, and any challenges so far.

Thus, this weeks workbook activity is a reflection activity:

Question 1: Reflect on what has been a key learning moment for you in this subject. This may be an 'aha, now I understand it' moment, or a 'wow, I didnt know that' moment or a that was really interesting moment. Briefly describe this key learning moment for you and how it was meaningful for your learning (3 marks, approximately 60 words)

Question 2: What has been a challenging learning moment in this subject? This could be a particular topic or activity, for example, an aspect of a lecture, self directed learning or Workbook activity, a tutorial, or an assessment. Briefly describe the challenge and how you overcame the challenge, or plan to overcome the challenge (eg. doing some extra reading, looking up articles or examples etc) (2 marks, approximately 40 words)
