The aim of the module is to build upon the Foundations of Nursing Practice in year 1, focussing in on meeting the acute/crisis and longer-term health needs of adults, accounting for their physical, psychological, social and cultural contexts. Students will hone their skills in searching and critically analysing research literature and policy, considering findings in relation to the reality of practice environments.

Introduction:

A brief outline of the topic you have chosen to explore with a brief rationale as to why.

What is the acute/ crisis need you would like to focus on?

Why did you choose this?

What is the acute/ crisis needs impact on hospital admission? How does it lead to hospital admission? How commonly does hospital admission occur as a result of the acute/ crisis need?

Identify how you found your literature (LO c).

What search engines or journals were used?

What terms and Boolean operators did you used to filter your search?

Refer to your session from the librarians around searching for literature.

Main body:

Below are questions and points to consider within the main body of text that demonstrate how you link your writing to the Learning Outcomes. You do not need to answer all of these questions or consider them in this order. They have been given to you to guide your work and are not an exhaustive list of questions. What you consider within your work, how you write about them and the order in which you do this is entirely up to you.

LO a:

According to the literature-

What is the impact of the acute/ crisis need on the patient?

What are the possible interventions?

What is the intended impact from said interventions? AND What are the likely outcomes for each intervention? What are the variables that effect or change the outcome for a given intervention?

Are they similar or different? Why might this be so?

LO b:

According to the literature-

What are the different options to support recovery.

Are they similar or different? Why might this be so? OR in what situation would they be used, what are the variables that make the option for recovery beneficial and what are the barriers to a certain recovery option.

What's your role as a nurse in supporting recovery? What skills might be used to support implementing an intervention?

Does the literature explicitly outline the role of the nurse? If Yes how? If No, what other literature or sources of information can be used to explain the role of the nurse?

Are there any ethical dilemmas within this you need to consider? What is the impact? Do they bring about barriers? How might they be overcome?

How do you engage the individual in designing and co-ordinating their own care? What are the different techniques that can be used? How does your role as a nurse fit into this?

Comparing different techniques, which would be most effective and why?

LO c:

At each discussion point you should be able highlight a couple of different pieces of literature or sources. From there you need to be able to compare and contrast these pieces of literature against each other. Do the key themes from each piece of literature agree or disagree with each other? Why? What's the impact?

Use CRAAP to explain relevant parts of the literature that enhance your discussion both for and against the points you are discussing.

Conclusion:

This should be a summary of the literature and implications on future practice. Use previously cited literature to bring back the key points that you discussed and explored in your review of the literature. Do not bring in any new points or ideas. This should only discuss what has already been explored.

General comments to consider

Third person writing throughout

Relate to a placement experience or topic of interest

How are the patients physical, psychological, social and cultural needs considered?

Please use at least 4 pieces of key literature/ research to critique and explore in more depth. This critique and exploration should be supported by further literature/ research that argues both for and against these key pieces of literature/ research.

Systematic reviews can be used, however, if you find these confusing to integrate into your own review of literature, then you can either seek more support from module team or academic skills OR find alternative supporting literature/ research.
