BACKGROUND: Triclosan (5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and disinfectant agent that was been used for over 30 years in a wide-array of personal care products (e.g., shampoo, soap and toothpaste). Research has shown that triclosan can alter hormone regulation in animals and also contribute to the development of antibiotic resistant microorganisms. Triclosan can escape sewage and water treatment processes and be discharged directly in its unaltered chemical form into receiving waters.
ANALYSIS OF TRICLOSAN. Triclosan can be measured in the aquatic environment by first filtering collected water samples, extracting and pre-concentrating filtered-water using solid-phase extraction (SPE) with subsequent detection and quantitation based on high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Isotopically labeled triclosan,is used as an internal standard and is added to the water sample prior to SPE to monitor for any loses during the processing of sample.
