Critical Analysis of Pharmacotherapy Research
Clinical research is an essential component of initial and continued drug approval. Clinical drug trials support availability of new drugs in the pipeline for improved patient outcomes (i.e., Mounjaro for treatment of type 2 diabetes) or a new therapy indication or off label use for an existing medication (i.e., Zonergan for essential tremor; trazadone for sleep). Analysis of current research and evidence informs clinical decision-making for the CNS prescriber in the role of disease prevention/health promotion, chronic disease management, restoration of health, and palliative care.
Select a pipeline drug from the past 2-3 years or an old approved drug with a new therapy indication or off-label use. Find a research article from a peer-reviewed journal to support or refute use the drug for the intended indication. Summarize the main points of the article, including the purpose, methodology, and findings of the study. Interpret briefly the pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic and pharmacotherapeutic review of the drug. Analyze the potential benefits of the drug to improve patient outcomes and safety risks associated with the drug. Conclude with a discussion of the relevance of the research findings for informing the CNS prescriber of the drug about dosing, patient education, and patient monitoring.
Instructions:
Conduct a literature search for the article on the selected drug. The article must be from a peer-reviewed journal and published within the last 5 years.
Summarize the main points of the research article (purpose, methodology and findings).
Interpret the pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic and pharmacotherapeutic principles of the drug.
Analyze the potential benefits of the drug for improvement of patient outcomes associated with disease prevention/health promotion, chronic disease management, restoration of health, and palliative care.
Analyze safety risks, cautions, or concerns for patients taking the drug.
Appraise the relevance of the research findings to inform clinical decisions for the CNS prescriber about dosing the drug, patient education, patient monitoring.
Prepare a summary of the analysis.
Begin the paper with a title page.
Use double spacing throughout the paper, including citation of articleAt the top of the second page, cite the article in 7thed. APA format.
On the first line below the citation, begin the summary of the article.
The summary should contain at least 1000-1500 words (not including citation), or roughly 2-3 pages in length.
Submit the assignment as noted in the course calendar.
