Picking a Topic
Each of the essays will be on a topic of your choosing from amongst topics provided on theList of Topics in Artificial Intelligence Applied to Lawbelow. You will need to do some research about the topics amongstSources of Academic Literaturebelow. It is advised to find 3-4 papers on the topic from among the sources. Your selection of a topic should be based on this brief familiarity with it. Read these papers and briefly review them; then, you can optionally include your personal considerations about the technologies, i.e., address its limits or for which other case studies it could be successfully employed.
Researching the topic
Once you have picked your topic, you need to examine the literature more closely and carefully to the best ability. The aim is to get as familiar and informed about your topic as you can.
If you need to understandthe terminology or concepts that are discussed in the paper, you can find other sources for them. For instance, if you are looking into dispute resolution and it is not outlined in the article, you can look at other literature. Make sure to reference all the work you use.
Also, critically explain how they can improve on it.
Reporting the topic
The essay should be researched using available literature and must be your own original work (see the note below on plagiarism and academic integrity). The essays should be informative, well-presented, well-structured, and clearly and grammatically written (see the related pages on writing). For further format information, see the fileComputersandLawAuthorGuidance.pdf.
Sources of Academic Literature
You can use sources that are academic works in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Law. The paper(s) you select should not be prior to 2010, but some flexibility is OK. In each of the sources, you will need to browse the table of content and abstracts of the journals and conferences to find the papers and topics. Some exploration will be necessary.

Methodology from Topic to Articles
You should pick a topic that seems attractive, even if it seems unfamiliar to you. The exercise is to take a topic and learn more about it from the academic literature, then convey that to the intended audience. So, once you pick a topic, do a little bit of research to get some initial familiarity - what is it about, what are the key concepts, and such? Also, critically explain how they can improve on it. With this initial familiarity, go to the academic sources listed above and look for articles that seem likely to be relevant. For example, in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Law, you can search within the journal for your topic words. Look at the title.
Look at the abstract and scan the articles quickly. With this, you are looking to find some articles that are plausible candidates for further in-depth reading. Once you have these, time to focus and read more deeply. As these are academic articles, it is likely that there will be material that is unfamiliar to you; try to gain as much information as you can and as makes sense to you. If an article seems inaccessible to you, then find something else. Focus deeper on the other articles, extracting the relevant information. You are then ready to draft your essay.
