Assignment details
This assignment aims to help you develop skills in selecting appropriateresearch designs and methods to address a research problem. You will prepare a researchproposal that will involve applying your knowledge of scientific research, researchapproaches and data collection methods, research formulation, ethics of scientific research, measurement and sampling methods.
For this assignment, you will develop a research proposal. You will choose and narrow your research question, review the literature, pose one or more hypotheses, and propose your research methods. You will draw on the critical reading abilities you developed inAssignment 1: Critical reviewandthe understanding of various research approaches you developed in Weeks 59.
In preparing a research proposal, you will develop your ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various experimental and non-experimental designs. You will also develop your ability to select the appropriate research methods for various research questions. These abilities will help you evaluate claims made in various academic and non-academic contexts throughout your unit and everyday life.
This assignment supportsunit learning outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Possible topics
- Evaluate the effectiveness of mental health/wellbeing services for vulnerable/at-risk young people.
- Explore the predictors of wellbeing for university students who are parents.
- Investigate the role of identity development for young adults who are gender diverse.
- Explore the role of acculturation on mental health outcomes in young refugees and asylum-seekers.
NB: These aregeneral topics, and you are free to address either broad or specific aspects of each topic. For example, one might look at the effectiveness of mental health and wellbeing services for young people, or the correspondence between implicit and explicit attitudes toward vocational education and higher education, etc.
Step 1: Before you write
A research proposal is a document that informs others of a research project that you intend to conduct. This would typically be used when applying
for a postgraduate psychology degree or working in industry. This proposal shouldhighlight the potential significance and feasibility of the research project. Moreover, writing a research proposal often helps individuals structure their thoughts, identify the purpose of their research and what is involved in conducting the project, and help develop a plan and specify the expected outcomes.
Before you write, you will need to:
- Choose your topic from thislist of research proposal topics
- Review the relevant literature on your topic.
- Write a draft of your research question.
Thisguide to writing research proposalswill assist you in breaking the assignment down into manageable steps. It includes formatting instructions and links to detailed APA format guides. The APA format(pp. 470491) in your eText andQuick answersformattingLinks to an external site.(APA Style, 2019). (Tip: Set aside a reasonable amount of time to conduct your literature review and write your research question.)
Step 2: Writing your proposal
When you are ready to start writing your proposal, follow this general structure:
- Title Page(not included in word count):Criterion 1
- The title page should be in APA format and include an informative title that makes sense and provides relevant information about the variables/topic.The title needs to be brief. Include the key terms that relate to yourproposal.
- Introduction (suggested word count: 200):Criterion 2
- Present the relevant background information for the research project. Introduce the general field of research and definitions of key terms, then narrow it to the specific area of your research project. This section should lead logically to either a gap in the existing research or the research problem you believe needs to be addressed.
- Aims (suggested word count: 100): Criterion 3
- Present the research question and/or hypothesis you will investigate and answer to fill the gap in research. The hypothesis must reflect the gap identified in the introduction/literature review.
- Literature review (suggested word count: 400):Criterion 4
- Provide relevant past research studies that you found in your review of the literature. Highlight the major issues, gaps in the research and the need for your particular research (i.e., 'Here is what wecaninfer, and here is what wecannot yetinferor cannot yet infer with confidenceand why'). You will also need to highlight where your research overlaps and differs from existing research.
- To help you get started on reviewing previous research, seeStudy and assignment helpLinks to an external site.forhelpfulguides and tips for finding research articles and books in relevant scientificdatabases.
- Significance of the research (suggested word count: 200): Criterion 5
Outline how your research will change an area of research or respond to a particular problem. This differs from thejustification as it explains how the research will lead to certainoutcomes. In particular, highlight the:
- theoretical contributions, and
- practical outcomes.
- Proposed research methodology (suggested word count: 400): Criterion 6
Describe and justify the research methodology. Use the future tense to describe what you will do. Address the following:
- participants
- methodology (e.g. quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods)
- design framework (e.g. experimental, non-experimental)
- data collection method(s) (e.g. tests, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, observations, existing data)
- sampling method (e.g. random, non-random), and
- ethical considerations.
- Scope and problems (suggested word count: 200): Criterion 7
Define the breadth of the research topic (That is, is theresearch focused on a broad research question, or will it focus on a particularissue or problem?). In this section, you will also identify any limitations or potential problems that may occur throughout the project.
- Writing Style: Criterion 8
- Please consider general spelling, grammar and paragraph structure. Must include relevant subheadings and use appropriate topic/linking sentences. All headings and formatting must conform to APA format.
- Referencing(not included in word count):Criterion 9
Include a reference list in APA style. It should be presented on its own page with a separate heading. You may find theAPA style guideLinks to an external site.helpful.
The word counts are guidelines only; you may need to alter these slightly depending on your chosen topic.
