Part 1 Info and Summary.

Introduction.

This essay is based on William Mattisons book called Introducing Moral Theology (2008), chapter 12 called Sin: Corruption of Human Happiness, specifically pages 235-239.

Sin in Christian and Catholic religion is very complex and conveys very profound philosophical meanings.

Throughout this essay, I will be examining the notion of Sin using a philosophical perspective, drawing from ideas and arguments that are demonstrated throughout the chosen text.

I have chosen this text as I am completing a Nursing degree, and acting in a sinful and selfish way is the opposite to how a nurse should deliver care.

Summary of Argument 1.

Mattisons text defines sin as a violation against reason, truth, and conscience, essentially manifesting from a misguided attachment to materialistic items.

This argument alludes to the idea that ultimate human happiness is supressed by prioritising those materialistic items over lifes fundamental necessities such as food, water, shelter etc, which eventually leads to a mislead idea of what is defined as a good life

Through demonstrating the idea of how society and people are interconnected, Mattisons text points out that when a person commits an act of wrongdoing, it creates a cascade affect leading to negative outcomes for how people operate and exist in society.

This is highlighted through Mattisons idea of although relatively harmless, the act of watching pornography will create mistrust in society and disrespect human worth.

Summary of Argument 2.

Mattisons text highlights the idea that sin is not only disrespecting moral rules and values, but it is also a direct wrongdoing against God and his plan.

This idea alludes to the fact that by committing sinful acts it shows a lack of trust in Gods guidance and love as humans choose to disregard the idea of what they believe God wants for them.

A main argument demonstrated throughout Mattisons text is how pride is known to be the root cause of sin.

It demonstrates a selfish way of existing by prioritising those materialistic items or mentality over what is really considered good.

Part 2A Your views.

Previous/current views on Argument 1.

My idea of sin was just based on the effect of individual moral wrongdoings, not how it also affects society.

I did not understand how what would usually be considered insignificant acts of sin, usually undermine human harmony.

Previous/current views on Argument 2.

I did not realise that sin was also an offence against God and his plan, rather it was just a negative impact on the individual.

I had not even considered how sin rejects gods knowledge and power.

Part 2B Impact on your beliefs.

How the argument in the chosen text affects my views on topic of Argument 1.

Mattisons text has opened my mind up to the notion of sin through highlighting its negative effects on society.

It has allowed me to deeply consider how ones choices can contribute to the societal component of sin.

How the argument in the chosen text affects my views on topic of Argument 2.

Through engaging with this text, it has allowed me to challenge my own opinions on sin, leading me to the realisation that it has such profound philosophical components.

It has also allowed me to recognise a newfound realisation of how pride and sin are closely related.

Part 2C Pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.
