ASSIGNMENT - Energy Analysis of Industry Data
30% of the Overall Mark
The assignment is an energy analysis of real-world industry data collected by energy management consultants. The assignment consists of 3 questions. The data files are available to download through the unit website. To complete the assignment, you will need to use the Internet to search for some data. Give complete references to your sources of information and state all your assumptions.
1) You are provided with the following data <Nickel Mine Whole of Site Analysis Final.xlsx> for a nickel mine site based on the spreadsheets used to collect and report the NGERS and National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) data for the site for the last financial year. Using the spreadsheet and information provided undertake the relevant analysis and produce the following plots/diagrams
- Plot the total energy use and use by fuel type by month for the 12 months for the mine. (2 marks)
- Plot the overall site energy intensity (GJ/tonne of nickel concentrate produced) per month for the 12 month period. (2 marks)
iii. Assuming that the nearest Bureau of Meteorology site is Mt Isa in Queensland derive a plot for average temperature and rainfall by month for a typical 12 month period. (2 marks)
- Based on the results in part ii and iii comment on whether there is any clear statistically significant relationship between weather conditions and energy intensity? (2 marks)
- Using the 12 months of data provided plot energy consumed (y axis) per month vs concentrate produced per month (x axis). Extrapolate the plot to intersect the Y axis. What, if anything, does this tell you about fixed and variable energy consumption on the site? (2 marks)
2) Using the data provided in the following file <Rockstar Open Cut Mine Production & Consumption Data Final.xlsx> for the Rockstar open cut copper mine in the Northern Territory:
- Complete (fill in the missing information in the boxes) the following <Rockstar Open Cut Pit EMB 2012-13 year draft.pdf> (or <Rockstar Open Cut Pit EMB 2012-13 year draft.jpg>) energy mass balance diagram for the mine part of the copper mine site (up to where ore is dumped on the Run Of Mill crusher pad prior to processing). (10 marks)
- Complete a Pareto analysis of the energy consuming equipment and activities (e.g. blasting, admin and maintenance) on the minesite. (4 marks)
iii. What does the EMB and Pareto analysis tell you about what are the main energy consuming equipment and activities on the minesite and should therefore be the focus of further detailed energy analysis? What is your recommendation as to which energy consuming areas should be assessed in more detail? (2 marks)
3) Using the following data <Tertiary mills load analysis final.xlsx> for electricity consumption and throughput for the tertiary grinding mills in a nickel processing plant undertake detailed analysis of the performance of each mill including:
- Plot of Energy consumed (y axis) versus daily throughput (tonnes) (x axis). Extrapolate the plots to the y axis. What does the interception point with the y axis mean? (6 marks)
- Plot of energy intensity (GJ energy used per tonne ore milled) (y axis) vs hourly throughput (tonnes) (x axis) (6 marks)
iii. Based on the above analysis do benchmarking between the mills. Determine which (if any) is/are the most energy efficient mill/s by ranking the mills in terms of energy efficiency. Explain your reasoning. (4 marks)
HOW IT IS ASSESSED (summary)
You will be assessed on these key criteria:
- Calculating correct values with correct units
- Fully labelled neat plots
- Making reasonable assumptions
- Good, concise description of trends in plots
- Demonstrating good reasoning and explanations
GUIDELINES for SUCCESS
You can discuss the questions of the assignment with your peers but you must write up the assignment on your own and in your own words. To complete the assignment, you will need to use the Internet to search for some data. Give complete references to your sources of information and state all your assumptions.Submit only ONE Word document and only ONE Excel document (use different worksheets for the different questions). The Energy Mass Balance diagram could be embedded in an Excel worksheet OR could be a separate PDF or JPEG file.
Some general tips for the project are:
1) If relevant, use a diagram to illustrate your text and clearly label the diagram.
2) Show, in your Word document, a step-by-step explanation of the method behind the calculations in your Excel spreadsheet.
3) The relevant Excel spreadsheet tables and graphs should be inserted into the Word document so that the marker can clearly view the tables and graphs in context or print out the Word document and take it home for marking i.e. the Word document should be able to stand alone without the Excel spreadsheet.
4) Please also submit the Excel spreadsheet along with the Word document for the find as many marks as possible marker so they can, if something is not right or clear, check out the formulae you have used for your calculations if you make a mistake.
