Policy Challenges: Success and Failure Assessment

1) Identify systematic challenges experienced by a particular group (for example, people who have transient housing; children who are placed in out-of- home state care, people who disabilities, immigrant women experiencing domestic violence and so on); 

(2) Synthesize what kinds of policies addressing the difficulties met by that particular group; 

(3) Analyse what kinds of supports have been achieved under the policy framework for that particular group to deal with difficulties; 

(4) Point out the arguments of how those policies failed to better empower that particular group; 

(5) Introduce an agency working in the relevant field and profile what you would do if you are a social worker in that agency to practice with that particular group and what kinds of ideologies or theories you are based on. 

Students can select to focus on a particular group in any country. Students can refer to relevant literature (articles, books or news) to understand policies targeting for that particular group. However, students need to directly read relevant policies to make in-depth reflection and find evidence to draw their own arguments. This means that students need to cite relevant policies in their essay directly. 

Students can choose non-profit, governmental, profit agencies or community groups to profile what they would do as a social worker there to empower that particular group. 

Marking Criteria: 

• The assessment will be marked in accordance with the following criteria: 
• Articulations of the difficulties experienced by a particular group in a country. 
• Explanations of why you focus on empowering that group. 
• The synthesis of relevant policies and analysis of how they achieved or failed to provide support for that particular group you focus on. 
• Demonstration of your intervention or practice of empowering that group in an agency. Indication of the theories or ideologies adopted by you to guide your practice. 
• Clarity of expression. 
• At least 8 references including the relevant policies and academic literature. 
• Correct APA referencing.
