Scenario 1:Waste Management
You are engaged by a regional Local Government (LG) to investigate future options forsolidwaste management (Do not discuss liquid waste). The LG currently has a landfill site that is nearing the end of its life at the current location. You have been asked to prepare a brief documentoutlining the advantages and disadvantages of 2 potential technologies for the future,NOT including landfill.
You must include
onethermal process (e.g. incineration, gassification, pyrolysis): AND
onebiological process (e.g. composting, anaerobic digestion, mechanical biological treatment)
These technologies do not need to be currently used elsewhere in Australia.
You can assume recyclables (metals, paper and some plastics)and household hazardous wastewill be removed from the waste mix so do not need to be included in your document. You need to consider human health and environmental impacts, management strategies, financial considerations, sustainabiity and social acceptance. You also need to rank your options and justify your answer.
Note the Local Government is able to work with other Local Governments to finance any proposals so while you need to discuss financial implications, do not disregard an option because of the cost.
Scenario 2: Communicable Disease / WASH
You are located in a WA regional local government that has a small indigenous community out of town but within the LG boundary. When you visit with the local health team, you realise several of the children have eye infections that you suspect may be trachoma. You also inspect several homes and find many do not have adequate plumbing or sanitation or adequate drinking water. You are required to prepare a report to councilabout how this should be managed. You will need to outline causative agents, epidemiology, and strategies for management.
Scenario3: Environmental Noise
Council has received plans to develop a cafe in a mixed use but mainly residential neighbourhood, that proposes to open from 6.00 am - 2.00 pm for early morning breakfast and then 5.00 pm - 10.00 pm for evening meals that will be accompanied by live music (indoors). The plan includes seating for 24 patrons inside and 16 outside (al fresco). The proponents (owners/developers) claim the premises will attract many people into the area and will provide a significant boost to the local economy. They claim early morning openings will attract cyclists and early morning exercisers and others for coffee and breakfast / lunch and they do not expect any excessive noise during this period. The evening meal service and music will be finished by 10pm The carpark for the venue is open to the street and there are currently no noise dampening structures in place.
Several nearby residents have formed an action group to protest against the development, claiming noise levels will have significant health impacts on those most exposed. You have been asked toprepare a summaryof the situation, outlining potential health and social impacts on residents from any exceedances above the allowable statutory levels. What factors would you need to take into account? Remember you are talking about environmental noise, not occupational noise and do not include effects of noise exposure on cafe employees.
Scenario 4: Food Safety training
Local council has a policy that all food handlers in a business must be trained in food safety.Prepare an information sheet to send to all the food businesses in the Local Government areaexplaining why training food handlers in food safety is so important, outlining some of the public health and financial implications that may arise if this training does not take place. In your information sheet, include some of the main points that will be included in the training.
Scenario 5: Pest Management
You have friends who recently returned from a camping trip in the north of Western Australia. They mentioned that there were lots of mosquitoes after dusk and that they were bitten many times. They are both now feeling quite unwell with headache and fever. What are some of their potential diagnoses given the area they were visiting and what further symptoms are they likely to experience? What advice would you give them to avoid future exposure? What can Local Government do to manage mosquitoes in recreational areas?
