Task details

Written communication and statistical analysis skills form an integral part of psychology and the competency to conduct and report analyses satisfies some of the graduate attributes required by Psychologys accrediting body in Australia (APAC). These attributes include knowledge and understanding, research skills, critical thinking skills, and communication skills. In this course, the practical statistics assessment for Regression evaluates the learning outcomes K1-K5, S1-S4, and A1-A3.

For this assessment, students are required to download the associated data set from Moodle and answer the statistics-related questions in the sections below using the Jamovi software. For each question, students should report the appropriate statistics in APA 7thedition format, provide a correct interpretation, and provide a screenshot of the relevant Jamovi output that supports their answer.

To complete the assessment, students may remove this information page and provide answers to the questions below in the spaces provided between questions. A single word document titled firstname_lastname.docx can then be submitted to the Turnitin submission portal in Moodle.

Note that the maximum word count is 1500, but it is likely that the assessment can be completed with much fewer words. There is no minimum word count for the assessments and Tables, Figures, and their associated captions are not included in the word count.

Regression Scenario

You have been hired to reanalyse data from the study of Klein, Heck, Reese, and Hilbig (2019). You have been asked to perform a multiple linear regression investigating the association of conscientiousness (i.e., independent variable) and political orientation (i.e., dependent variable), controlling for age, which is a potential confound. Recall that a confounding variable is something that is related to both the predictor (IV) and outcome (DV), and that multiple regression designs help rule out third-variable explanations for the relationship between the IV and DV.

In Klein et al.s (2019) study, participants were provided with several questionnaires assessing age, personality, and political orientation.

The personality variableshonesty-humility, emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, andopenness to experiencewere derived from the 60-item HEXACO PersonalityInventory developed by Ashton and Lee (2009; TIPI). You will be focusing on the conscientiousness variable.

The political orientation scale consisted of two items and was developed by Klein et al. for their study (but was based on previous research). The data file contains a single variable that was calculated as the average of the scores of the items, which follow:

  1. If you had to place yourself on the political spectrum, where would you place yourself?

Your task is to download theRegression.omv data file from Moodle andcomplete the analysis data report below to submit to the research team for review.

Before conducting the analysis, please include your initials in the variable names for every variable.

Regression Data Report

Create an APA formatted correlation table that includes the IV, DV, and control variable. (5 marks)

Provide a write-up of the statistical evidence that tests for linear relationships. (2 marks)

Provide a write-up of the statistical evidence that tests for multicollinearity. (2 marks)

Provide a write-up of the statistical evidence that tests for independence of observations. (2 marks)

Provide a write-up of the statistical evidence that tests for homoscedasticity. (2 marks)

Provide a write-up of the statistical evidence that tests for normality. (2 marks)

Write out the full regression equation and use it to predict a political orientation score when age is equal to 30 and conscientiousness is equal to 4. (5 marks)

Write the inferential results of the regression analysis in APA (7thedition) format. (6 marks)

Provide an interpretation of the results that is suitable for a discussion section of a lab report. (5 marks)

Research Scenario 2

Dr. Jones, a psychologist, is investigating the determinants that affect students' motivation levels in middle school. Specifically, she is interested in how family environment (FE), peer influence (PI), and personal goal setting (PGS) play a role in shaping students' motivation, assessed through their engagement in class activities, measured by class attendance (CA). She gathers information on these elements from a diverse group of middle school students in her area. She opts to utilize structural equation modelling for her analysis. The sequence of variables in structural equation modelling often reflects theoretical frameworks or existing empirical findings. In Dr. Jones's research, she arranges these variables based on her insights into the various factors affecting student motivation:

  • Family Environment (FE): She posits that this is a crucial factor that affects a student's motivation levels, backed by extensive research indicating that familial contexts significantly influence children's emotional and educational development.
  • Peer Influence (PI): While not as pivotal as FE, Dr. Jones recognizes from prior studies that the level of influence from peers can have a considerable impact on a student's motivational behaviours.
  • Personal Goal Setting (PGS): Although there is limited research in this area, Dr. Jones has noted in her observations that a student's ability to set and pursue personal goals is also a key contributor to their overall motivation in school.

Write out in three steps how you would run the hierarchical regression. (4 marks)

For example:

Step 1: Add the variable x1

Regression Equation: Y = ?0 + ?1(X1) + e

Where:

  • Y is the dependent variable
  • X1 is the independent variable
  • ?0 is the y-intercept
  • ?1 is the slope of the regression line and
  • e is the error term.

Step 2: Add the variable x2

Regression Equation: Y = ?0 + ?1(x1) + ?2(x2) + e

Where:

  • x2 is the second independent variable and
  • ?2 is the coefficient for x2
