The Assessment Task

This assessment consists of two parts. The first part requires you to select a social problem from the list below, and to create a poster aimed at young people. Therefore you need to ensure that the material used on your poster is appropriate and accessible for your audience. This poster should include information about the social problem, how it affects young people. and what responses can be taken to counteract or manage this social problem. You will also need to include a bibliography on your poster.

Social Problems:

  • Bullying Drugs
  • Graffiti
  • Knife Crime

For the second part of this assessment, you will be asked questions about your poster and will be required to justify your chosen social problem. With your verbal justification, you will also be required to demonstrate an understanding of a chosen theory which helps explain your social problem, as well as the theory's limitations.

Some questions which might be asked indude:

  • What are the dangers of your chosen social problem?
  • Who is likely to be affected by this (think in terms of gender, race and socio-economic status as well as age)?
  • How can we theorise this social problem to make sense of why it occurs?
  • What are the limitations of your chosen theory?
  • What solutions have been suggested or could be applied to tackle this social problem?
  • Do you think this is really a social problem of something which has been exaggerated by the media?

For all questions asked, it is not enough to provide one-word responses. You need to demonstrate your understanding on your chosen social problem and theory in detail

The poster is due on Friday 19 May 2023. The verbal justifications will be delivered face-to- face during the Assessment/Exams period in Semester 2, and will be 10minutes long (exact) I dates, times and locations will be organized and released on NILE once exam timetables have been published). Notes are permitted as reminders during the verbal justification, however it is important you remember the assessment is a verbal justification and therefore reading off your notes is not suitable.

Posters should be created in PowerPoint guidance on how to create this can be found on NILE
