1) Select a profession or industry that you would like to investigate and focus your report upon. (NOTE: It’s a good idea to have a backup topic.)
2) Write a memo to the class and instructor that explains your topic choice. Consider addressing the following questions:
a) What topic have you chosen?
b) Why did you choose that particular topic?
c) What, if anything, do you already know about your topic? (You will need to be brief!)
d) What do you hope to learn from your interview?
e) What are examples of a few of the questions you’d like to ask?
f) What are other sources might you consider to augment your interview?
g) How would a positive/negative interview affect your future plans?

3) Discuss your responses to above questions in a brief and informal 2-minute oral presentation to the class. HINTS: Use natural, conversational language during your presentation; you will not be reading your memo to us word-for-word, you will be speaking to the audience. You will engage the audience and make eye contact just as you would speaking with anyone in person. Consider engaging the class by asking for suggestions, feedback, and shared experiences/interests.

4) You will want to get in touch with your contact via a short, well-written “prospecting” e-mail or, in rare cases, a phone call.

5) Finally, write a short report. The focus of your report will be to share the requirements and challenges associated with the pursuit of work in your chosen occupational field of study, so they may themselves decide if that field may be of interest to them.
