Executive Summary

Introducing Haven

Haven is community interest non-government agency that works to support women to develop business and digital skills and provide access to financial services, enabling them to save, trade, and grow.

Key service users are women wholesale retailers between the ages of 18 to 45. Many of the traders are family breadwinners with cultural and local knowledge of the market and their trade. The bulk of the service users are semi-literate with limited understanding and trust of modern administrative and business management skills reflected in the traditional methods they currently adopt to save their earnings.

Haven aims to support women with upskilling courses that support implementation of innovative approaches and practices for doing business. Haven will provides microfinance and micro-banking services which encourage them to trust and embrace in modern financial practices such as saving capital and maintaining reserves for their business.

Additionally the organisation aims to provide access to semi-formal administrative and accounting skills training to service users to empower them in their trading and provide them with preparedness to interface with their suppliers and clients to support their capacity to develop formal operational knowledge and understanding of modern banking approaches. This training will develop their money management skills.

The organisation will also provide women with access to short and mid term bridging micro loans by partnering with local banks to support expansion and bridge gaps that arise as a result of hand to mouth business practices

About the founder

Clementina Aina is the founder of 6CSkills and Haven Mobile Money. She was a GSMA UK Hackathon participants that was subsequently selected to participate in a capacity-building summer school as part of the 3-year project on bridging the gender gap in social innovation that GSMA has been driving. (Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme). The Haven mobile application was announced as one of the winning teams for its enabling features such as fun and interactive activities that help women to take control of their finances. Having completed a needs and feasibility assessment, Haven intends to implement a new mobile money app (for women with limited financial literacy skills) being developed,. The mobile app prototype is capable of supporting core delivery of key services. It will be available to women who engage with services Haven provides.

Content in the mobile application will aim to be culturally responsive Bite size education resources content within the app. The organisation will also organise fun activity led training and upskilling sessions via WhatsApp groups, Zoom meeting question and answer sessions and YouTube channels. This will provide access to financial literacy, money management, accounting and basic business management skills training courses which will also be supported by you tube videos.

They plan to embed recorded training sessions and business planning and financial management resources in the app translated into in local languages ( Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa and pidgin English) to make adoption easier and establish Haven as the go to app specifically tailored to womens needs.

The app will provide a facility for women to save and manage their money and profits from their business and provide access to small to medium business bridging loans by partnering with local banks. Haven also intends to provide access to microfinance for women already doing business who need loans to start up or accelerate their business and Capital management -women who require financial support for operational cash flow, such as purchasing materials to produce and selling stock/stock goods. This will help women negotiate with suppliers, expand their trade and increase their business revenue to grow their cottage/small enterprises.

Overview of existing processes and Organisational short and long term plans

Processes are at inception/planning stage.

Short Term Goal: Achieve implementable system and process design

Long term goal: Achieve all services stated in outline and needs.

Project needs

The organisation as a whole is in inception stage and is seeking project and operations management consulting input to gain insight on the processes the organisation will need to embed for its service delivery to achieve its goals.

They require support to plan and design their operational systems and map an ideal and efficient business process to deliver all aspects of the service outlined in their introduction.

The plan should also present a solution to their current business needs which requires them to structure out how their organisation will deliver its services as outlined. The plan should enable implementation of the mobile application for their organizational needs. Overall, the plan should be support profitability for banks that support the microfinance service. It should also present a sustainable project and operations management approach with strong connections to the organisations goals.

What am I required to do in this assignment?

Assignment: This assessment accounts for 60% of the total grade.

For this assignment, you are required to work in groups of 5 students allocated randomly by your unit tutor.

You will be required to produce a project and operations management portfolio and participate in graded group presentation. You will choose from real life outlined problems/situations/needs presented by 3 clients and focus on 1 client for your group work, group presentation and individual report.

Your group work will involve creating an operations management and project management solution for your chosen client organisation out of the 3 organisations focussing on sustainable project and operations management.

The client budget for your consulting work is no more than 5,000 and any work you propose must start and end inside a time period of 3 months or less.

You should give attention to the context of aligning your solutions to continued improvement through project, program and portfolio management to fulfil operational excellence relevant to the learning on the unit from Weeks 1-6.

PART A Group work and Presentation (10% of total marks)

Prepare and present face to Face presentation of Oral assessment of Group Output based on the items 1-4 of work required for the individual project report detailed in Part B. The Oral presentation exam will take place in Week 6 in class.
