Instructions for preparing ISE 298 report
General Guideline:
Send me a one-page proposal by the end of the second week of the semester you plan to complete ISE 298. The proposal should include a. the topic of your project; b. outline of your report; c. methodologies to be used; d. planned project progress agenda
Every other week, send me a progress report that summarizes the work completed, planned activities for the next two weeks, key concerns, etc.
Every month, send me your work-in-progress report and other workpieces, e.g. source code, excel file, etc. that demonstrate your work progress by far.
Report due date is one week before the last day of instruction for the corresponding semester.
A project report will not be accepted if you fail to meet the above requirements. You will have to stay for one more semester.
Report preparation Instructions
Make sure, you minimally cover the following things in the report
Title page
Table of content
Included chapter numbers, chapter title, sections and subsections of the chapters and their titles
List of Figures
Figure numbers, their titles and corresponding page numbers on which they appear in the report
List of tables
Table numbers, their titles and corresponding page numbers on which they appear in the report
Abstract
Abstract should be written to include the background of the problem, motivation and statement of the problem, methodologies used to solve the problem, and the outcome of the problem (quantified results if possible for the improvements achieved)
Introduction
This chapter covers the detailed background of the problem, motivation and the problem statement. What you have done in the report to address the problem (very briefly)
Review of literature
If applicable relevant references must be reviewed in this chapter
Terminologies, concepts, definitions, abbreviations used in the report in this chapter
Solution methodology
Explain the methodologies used to solve the problems, how they are applied with details including how data was collected, justify why the collected data is appropriate, data analysis.
Analysis and Results
Explain with details analysis performed showing calculations performed, formulae used and so on. Discuss the results of the analysis. Make appropriate recommendations based on the analysis results.
Conclusions and Recommendations for Future
Here describe your problem (briefly), methodologies used to solve the problem (briefly), a summary of results obtained and recommendations made. If anything that you think might be appropriate in future to be addressed should be included as the recommendations for future.
Writing Requirements
Do not write report in the first person. Never write I was hired to do this and I used this methodology and so on. Never use I in the report.
All the figures and tables must be labeled and numbered. They must be explained in the report thoroughly by referring to them in the text of the report. When you refer to figure in the text of the report, capitalize the first letter of the word figure. The same is true for tables. For example, as seen in Figure 1. Interpret tables and figures for the readers. If tables include calculated values in the columns or rows, give details of the calculations by referring to the columns of the tables. If figures and tables are copied from research papers, textbooks, and so on, then the source should be cited right there. Give details of all the calculations used in presenting the material in the report.
All the references must be cited throughout the text of the report wherever appropriate.
If you use Appendix to present some relevant information, then refer to the appendix completely. For example, the results are detailed in the appendix Table A-1. Do not just have appendix and not refer to the information contained in the appendix. All the information included in the appendix must be referred to in the text of the report. Otherwise, do not bother to include appendix.
A new chapter starts on a new page.
The report should be double spaced or 1.5 spaced. If you do not indent the first line of the paragraph, then leave a blank line between two successive paragraphs in the report.
Make sure the things presented in the report flows logically from one chapter to another chapter. Always have a smooth transition between the successive sections of each chapter the report and between the successive chapters.
Note: Please start with a table of contents. Organize the whole report in the table of contents form with each chapter title, number and sections and sub sections titles and numbers of each chapter. Once you have organized all the material in table of contents form you can start writing report. You can write introduction and abstract after completing the whole report.
The first two pages should be formatted as follows:
