How does exposure to blue light at night affect sleep?
Most of us have heard about the negative effects that exposure to short wavelength (blue) light can have on sleep. In this essay you will describe and critically evaluate some of the scientific evidence used to support these effects. You will also briefly describe some of the proposed mechanisms through which exposure to blue light at night is thought to negatively impact sleep and some of the strategies that may be used useful in reducing and/or eliminating exposure to blue light at night.
In this essay, you should:
- Describe sleep and explain why it is important to get consistent good quality sleep.
- Describe the visible light spectrum, with a particular focus on short-wavelength (blue) light.
- Explain how exposure to blue light at night commonly occurs (e.g., through hand-held electronic devices) and what impact that exposure has on sleep and alertness.
- Explain some of the mechanisms through which blue light at night is thought to affect sleep and alertness (e.g., suppression of melatonin, social stimulation).
- Describe at least two evidence-based strategies (behavioural, technology-based) that are useful in reducing and/or eliminating exposure to blue light at night and its negative effects on sleep
