PSY337 Assessment 2 Questions
PSY337 Assessment 2 Questions
Question 1 - ANOVA
A school-based psychologist is interested in the concept of a growth mindset. The school currently has a mindfulness program which has been showing limited results. She decides to compare the effectiveness of these two methods on student well-being. All students are split into one of three groups: a control group who does not take part in an intervention, the mindfulness intervention, and a new intervention designed to promote a growth mindset. Each student completes a questionnaire which gives them a well-being score before and after the intervention and she calculates a change score representing the discrepancy between these two.

Question 2 Chi-Squared Goodness of Fit (it needs to edit expected outcomes out)
Researchers at CDU are interested to understand whether First Nations people experience worse COIVD-19 outcomes than the general population of Australia. They already have data from a large sample of the Australian population (including First Nations and non-First Nations people) which indicates that the following distribution of outcomes has been observed among the general population of people who contract and survive COVID-19:
Mild symptoms; no hospitalisation = 60%
Moderate symptoms; no hospitalisation = 30%
Severe symptoms; hospitalisation without ventilator = 8%
Severe symptoms; hospitalisation with ventilator = 2%
The CDU research team collect data from 200 First Nations people in the Northern Territory who have recently experienced COVID-19 and asked them to state which of the above categories they fall into.

Question 3 Simple Linear Regression
For your honours thesis, you decide to look at whether performance at undergraduate level (as a percentage out of hundred) is predictive of future earnings (annual income in $AUD). You collect this data from 900 former CDU psychology students who graduated in 2010.

Question 4 - 2 Ways Factorial ANOVA
A forensic psychologist who is interested in improving the accuracy of eyewitness testimony wants to test the effectiveness of a new app they have developed called Remember it!. The app is designed to be installed on everyones phones so that if someone witnesses a crime they can quickly open it up and fill out a series of questions designed to help people record as much relevant detail about the scene and suspect as they can. She designs an experiment in which people watched a video of a crime being committed and then afterwards half of the sample completed the questions on the Remember it app and the other half were instructed to tell the experimenter about the crime they had seen. Within each of these two groups, roughly half of the sample watched a video that was of poor quality where it was difficult to discern the features of the suspect of high quality where the features of the suspect could be more easily identified. A week later, all participants were sent a survey which asked them to recall details of the crime they witnessed. Each participant was given a recall score, ranging from 0 to 50.

Question 5 Multiple Regression
The Australian army is interested in developing a predictive model to identify individuals who perform best under pressure. They have several variables of interest that they think may predict performance: Resilience, years of education, years served in the army, and age. they collect this data for a sample of 100 soldiers and also assess their performance on a high stress task, giving them a performance under pressure score.
Download the dataset called Question5.csv from Learnline. Using multiple regression, identify the most efficient and effective model that predicts performance using the variables in the dataset. Describe the process of coming to your conclusion and what criteria used to determine which model was the best. You do not need report the outcomes of the final regression model in APA format or test whether the underlying statistical assumptions of multiple regression are met.
Question 6. One way repeated measures ANOVA
A new-age marriage therapist is interested to see whether encouraging couples to exercise together improves marriage satisfaction more than simply spending time together. She designed a study in which 40 couples took part in three conditions: a couples cycling program, a couples military boot-camp exercise program, and a couples pottery class. Couples took part in each program for 6 weeks and their marriage satisfaction was assessed at the end of each on scale from 0 to 10. The order in which couples took part in the three conditions was counterbalanced.

Question 7. Chi-Squared Test of Independence
A pharmaceutical company has recently developed a new vaccine (Robo-schelpen) for Influenza Type A which shows high efficacy in reducing symptoms and hospitalisations for those with the virus. The vaccine is now being administered in health settings across Australia. However, the company is concerned about media reports of high rates of heart attacks among those recently administered the vaccine. To determine whether they need to be concerned about these adverse consequences of the vaccine, they design a study in which people are given either the standard vaccine that has been used in practice for the past 10 years or Robo-schelpen and then record the number of heart attacks in each group in the year following administration.

Question 8 Multiple Linear Regression
Government researchers are concerned about high rates of suicide among young men in in Australia. They want to know what factors are associated with an increased risk of suicide so that they can develop targeted prevention interventions. They collect data from a random sample of 2000 young Australian men (aged 18-35), including a measure of their level of suicidality, and several variables they hypothesise may be associated with suicidality including income, number of close friends, and alcohol consumption (drinks per month).

Question 9. Fisher Exact Test
The CDU Psychology teaching team are interested to know whether students who attend statistics classes in-person perform better than those who only attend classes online. They collect data from the 2022 third-year PSY337 cohort, including their status (online vs. in-person) and their final grade category (pass, credit, distinction, high distinction).

Question 10. One way Independent ANOVA
A team of researchers at University College London are trialling the efficacy of Psilocybin (i.e., the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) as a treatment of depression. They recruit 300 people with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder and split them into one of three groups: a placebo group, a group who receives a small dose of Psilocybin, and a group who receives a large dose of Psilocybin. Each group takes part in the study for 2 months and a change in depression score is calculated that represents the discrepancy in depression scores from baseline to post-intervention. Larger scores indicate greater reductions in depression.
