PSYC1052/5172 Assessment 2 (Research Comprehension Task)
PSYC1052/5172 Assessment 2 (Research Comprehension Task)
You are to choose one of the five articles that are available under the assessment 2 section. After reading the journal article complete the tasks below and submit the final assessment using this template. This is a comprehension task so please do not copy and paste sections from the article. You will need to demonstrate understanding by paraphrasing throughout.
Section 1:
APA reference of the article chosen
(EXCLUDED from word count) Introduction: Briefly describe the topic of this article. What was the general area of research? Ensure that you define key concepts.
Introduction: Describe (1) the main theoretical framework discussed in this paper, and (2) the main knowledge gap authors attempted to address in this study (i.e., what is not known about the topic that the authors are attempting to find out?). Report each in a paragraph and not as bullet points. Ensure that you define and cite the theory, as well as define key concepts if used.
Introduction: What were the research question(s) and/or hypotheses explored here?
Method: This section requires you to demonstrate comprehension regarding the methodology (participants, measures/materials/procedure, ethics). To do so, describe the participants (sample size and characteristics), measures/materials/procedure (what materials the researchers used and what the participants were required to do in the experiment, e.g., did they complete any particular tasks or answered any specific self-report surveys?). Apply critical thinking concerning ethics AND cultural responsivity (i.e., was the research ethical and culturally responsive?). Consider the implications for both ethics and culture.
Results: What were the main findings of this study? Although you do not need to restate the hypotheses, the main findings should be related to the hypotheses.
Discussion: Report whether the findings support the predictions and/or provide answers to the research questions. Ensure you clearly state whether one or all of the hypotheses were supported.
Discussion: Assessment 4 requires you to develop a research proposal based on the limitations of the chosen article. Report how this study can be followed up. For instance, were there any limitations in the current study that can be addressed in future research? What did the authors recommend based on the limitations?
**Important for assessment 4**
Discussion: What is the take-home message from this study? That is, are there any real-world implications of the findings? What is your overall conclusion?
Section 2:
Study plan: Assignment 2 is submitted at the start of week 6. You will then have five weeks until assignment 4 is due at the start of week 11. These two assignments are related. Using your knowledge of effective study plans up to this point, report on the following:
Briefly describe the plan you have put in place in order to successfully complete assignment 4 and use literature to support this plan.
Incorporate aspects of wellbeing in your study plan and use literature to support your plan to incorporate wellbeing.
Literature to support both the study plan and wellbeing could be research evidence or theory. There should be a citation for each (study plan and wellbeing).
Relevant articles: Identify two recent (published in the past decade) peer-reviewed research articles that are relevant to the topic of the article you just reviewed and include the references for these two papers below in APA format. Include a short description (maximum 40 words) of each article under each reference to state why they are relevant to the article topic. Note that both your references here and the descriptions are EXCLUDED from the word count.
Insert all references used in this assessment in APA formatting with a references heading followed by references:

Assessment 2 Details and Instructions
In PSYC1052students will be guided through essential skills in understanding, reading, and writing formal scientific research reports. Assessment 2 (Research Comprehension Task) and Assessment 4 (Guided Research Proposal) are complementary, such that completion of Assessment 2 will provide important feedback for students to use in completion of Assessment 4.Thepurpose of Assessment 2is to prepare students to be able to complete Assessment 4, by checking understanding of the basic structure of a psychological research article, as well as the ability to locate, understand, and describe important aspects of a psychological research article including theory, study aims and hypotheses, method, results, and conclusions.
For Assessment 2, you will be provided withfive (5) published scientific articles, each of which reports research relevant to the general topics of this unit. From this set of 5 papers, you are required toselect one (1) article onlyand respond to a series of questions on the response sheet provided. These questions relate to the background to the research topic, the method, results, conclusion, and future directions, as well as checking understanding of what constitutes an appropriate academic source and the structure of a research report. As a final component of Assessment 2, you are asked to articulate specific study plans you will put in place in order to complete Assessment 4, in line with the approach taught in tutorials in Weeks 1 and 2.
By completing this task, you can obtain feedback on your general comprehension of the research, your approach to academic writing, and your general approach to sustainable study practices. Completing Assessment 2 therefore best prepares you to adequately completeAssessment 4. Feedback on Assessment 2 will be provided in enough time to be integrated into responses for Assessment 4.
Specific information about this assessment
You will be providedfive (5)published scientific articles, each of which reports research relevant to the general topics of this unit. You will need to selectONEof these articles to use for Assessment 2.
To complete Assessment 2, you should access the folder of provided articles that is available on the Moodle Class space. You should read the articles carefully and select one which interests you the most (or one for which you believe you can best answer the questions provided).
You should answer the questions provided, using the response template and the article you have chosen. Responses should be made directly on the template (i.e., answer the question on the word document, without deleting or editing the question).
You should adhere to formal academic style in preparing your responses (see the guides provided) and should conform to APA 7thformatting and referencing style.
To submit the assessment, you should submit your completed Research Comprehension Task template to the "Submit Assessment 2: Research Comprehension"link in the Moodle class space.
One question within this task requires you to identifyTWOfurther empirical research articles that are relevant to the topic of your chosen paper. For this question, you are required to conduct a basic search of a scientific database and include your chosen references + a short explanation as to why these articles are relevant and useful.
Where references to academic sources are required, it is expected that you will format and reference according to the American Psychological Association (APA) Manual - 7th edition.
The final section of the task requires you to think about your personal approach to assessment preparation and to articulate a basic study plan for completing Assessment 4. To prepare for this question, you should participate in, and complete the tasks in the Week 1 and 2 tutorials.
The word limit is800 words. This applies only to the responses written by you, excludingthe questions provided on the template. The reference list is excluded from the word count.
The assessment will be graded according to the marking criteria included in the unit outline.
Feedback on this assessment will be provided within 3 weeks, to allow for feedback to be incorporated into the responses for Assessment 4: Guided Research Proposal.
