The purpose of placement tests is merely to measure the capabilities of an applicant in perusing a certain path of language learning and to place them into an appropriate level or section of a language curriculum or school. A students performance on a placement test should indicate the point at which the student will find material neither too easy nor too difficult but appropriately challenging. Teachers benefit from placement decisions because they end up with classes that have students with relatively homogeneous ability levels. As a result, teachers can focus on the problems and learning points appropriate for that level of students. If there is a mismatch between the placement test and what is taught in a program, the danger is that the groupings of similar ability levels will simply not occur. Thus, the placement tests that are most successful are those constructed for situations. They depend on the identification of the key features at different levels of teaching in the institution. They are tailor-made rather than bought off the peg (Hughes ,2003). This usually means that they have been produced in house. The work that goes into their construction is rewarded by the saving in time and effort through accurate placement. the purpose of placement procedures is to help those who need more instruction. In other words, A placement test should effectively classify learners into the proper levels with high reliability and validity (Daugherty et al., 2018). Placement tests go through a design, evaluation, and analysis process. ESL placement tests accurately evaluate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
