The student is an analyst, with intimate familiarity with the company. The examiner is a shareholder, educated in accounting and finance but lacking intimate familiarity with this particular company. Answer the following questions, with reference to your company. This assignment will be marked out of 100.
Provide a brief description of the company, its principal industries and the geographic regions in which it operates. (5 marks)
Identify two macro-level indices relevant to your chosen company. Discuss why each indicator is contextually relevant to understanding the financial statements of your company. You may not choose the indices used for the in-class examples. (20 marks)
Tabulate observations of each of these indices at three recent points of time. You are required to construct your own indices, rather than reproduce material from the internet. However, you are welcome to use data from the internet as input for your indices. (20 marks)
Discuss the trends in the indices. Assess the implications of these trends for your interpretation of your companys financial statements. (20 marks)
Identify three key industry competitors of your company. If you believe there are fewer than three key players, argue your view. (10 marks)
Discuss the structure of the industry in which your company operates (e.g., is it a duopoly, oligopoly etc?) Assess implications for your interpretation of the companys financial statements. (20 marks)
