SOWK920 Literature Review - Guidelines

Detailed information Students will select and review a number of scholarly sources that discuss social work practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and/or communities in the context of a relevant and appropriate practice area of choice.

Marking Criteria A practice area relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and/or communities is identified.

Students analysis is argued critically and succinctly, directly discussing concepts of social injustice and inequality in the context of their chosen practice area.

The students review (comprehension and analysis) draws on scholarly references to support their analysis, and an evaluation of the source is provided.

UOW Harvard referencing style is used consistently and the content is in line with social work ethics and professional conduct (including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and word count)

Length Essay format- 1,500 words (-/+ 10%)

Weighting 20%

Assessment Due 20th March 2023 (Monday in Session Week 4) Final submission time: 11:30pm

Task

Students are required to select and review several scholarly sources that discuss social work practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, in a chosen practice area relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and/or communities.

Based on your analysis of your chosen sources, discuss the role social work practice can play in struggles over inequality and social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities.

The suggested literature review format is as follows:

Introduction

Analysis/discussion (ideally one source per paragraph)

Conclusion

Reference list (It is up to you to decide the number of references that is sufficient to comprehensively fulfil assessment requirements; you are required to provide an in-depth analysis of practice which generally requires a minimum of 3-4 references)

*You may use subheadings for your assessment depending on how you choose to format your writing.

Additional guidelines:

Scholarly references and set readings from SOWK920 need to be included, such as journal articles and books. Websites that cannot directly source the author (such as Wikipedia) should not be included. News articles where the author can be directly referenced can be included. There should be at least 3 scholarly sources for the report.

UOW Harvard refencing style is to be used.

The writing style should follow a formal academic essay format (thus using 3rd person), and your font should be readable (calibri, arial, new times roman etc), your line spacing at 1.5 and the alignment of your writing set to justified (i.e., equally spaced to the borders of the page);The content of assessment (including phrases, words and sources used) must be in alignment with social work ethics and professional conduct. I.e., racist undertones and/or language will NOT be tolerated, use of inappropriate and/or non-relevant sources will also NOT be tolerated nor accepted.
