Course taking : Master of Professional Accounting
and MBA PROGRAM
at Holmes Institute
Dear Admission Officer,
I wish to continue my study to do Master of Professional Accounting and MBA Program at your institution. Allow me to introduce myself a little bit. I grew up in a family education is equal to male and female. As the youngest daughter, my parents are a little bit overprotective although I am not spoiled by them. They want me to get a very good career, but at the same time they do not want me to be far away from them permanently. Therefore, if they want me to pursue my career in Indonesia, a tittle with a Master degree level, is a must! Because we are all aware that growing up in Asian country like Indonesia, workforce is very competitive. Education does matters for a better career. The higher you get your degree, the better chance for you to be in the higher position, especially if you are graduate from overseas. So it is like prior agreement, between me and my parents, after completed my bachelor degree, the option is to proceed with master degree education. It is true that it does not necessary to study overseas, but after doing comparison study, I decided to continue my education in Australia. Allow me to mention the reasons why I chose Australia as my study destination.
Firstly, because Australia is the closest English-speaking country to Indonesia. Skill in English is like a highway to smoothen your career if you want to join a big company. So, it becomes an advantage for me if I can master this skill while I embrace the knowledge in accounting field and business management field as well. Secondly, because this is my first experience living overseas, so my parent feels safe if my sibling is around, although I am not living with her, but at least, I am not totally alone by myself. Thirdly, because of the education system. In term of academic consideration, in Indonesia, the master degree program is only single degree and most of them though in Indonesian language with longer duration. The one that I will study at Holmes institute is a- two years Master degree program with double degree tittle. To me, this is efficient, effective and smart. It is also offered in course work method, so I do not need to write a thesis at the end of the program. Different from Indonesia, in the last semester, we must write thesis, and this usually becomes the biggest obstacles in finishing the program on time, not only because not easy to get the data for the thesis, but also to get approval from supervisor, not to mention difficulties in arranging the meeting with supervisor. These facts will delay the completion process - the classic problem in Indonesia. In addition to the above, a very good master degree program in Indonesia is not cheap as well while the environment is still using Indonesian language. A famous MBA requires minimum 5 years working experience in managerial level, while at Holmes it does not require working experience. Furthermore,
In regard to comparing the program between the one at Holmes at other countries,(beside I have compared it with the one in Indonesia as mentioned above) I, indeed, also have done a comparison among UK, Canada and USA . In the UK, master degree program is only one year duration. Therefore, the effective study time experience most likely will be only 10 months, (due to semester break, public holiday, and other cut off). So, I think I won't get enough experience if it is only for 1 year and the study will be too tight for me. Canada, I don't consider this country because to me the weather is too extreme during winter, and I am pretty sure that my body is not going to be able handle it. How could I finish my study well if the weather ruins my concentration during winter time. USA is too far for me. I have no family or sibling in the USA. If I study in Australia, my parents do not need to fly too far away to visit me and as I mentioned, my sister is also stay here so they can visit us at the same time. New Zealand is different case. Most of its masters degree in New Zealand is at least minor thesis, and this is not really my cup of tea.
Why Holmes Institute?
First because of its unique program (I will get double degree tittle with only 2 years program). The MPA Program offers the unit that I want to learn, such as Accounting for Business Decision, Corporate Accounting, Audit, Assurance, and compliance and some more other subjects that I believe I will need them to extend my skill. For MBA unit, I am really interested in taking Managing across the borders unit, legal aspects of international trade and enterprise; the units that will help me to work in big foreign company in Indonesia later. Absolutely this will increase my opportunity to apply for a job in a big city like Jakarta. I would like to highlight that beforehand, I seriously studied all the subjects offered at this program before decided to pursue it. There is no big gap between I finished my study program with my plan to continue my study a Holmes institute, because I just recently graduated from my Bachelor Degree. While waiting for the process, I work in a small company (pls see my CV) and I joined IELTS preparation for a couple of months before sitting for the IELTS International test. I have a rational expectation for my career when I return to Indonesia, because this study will be a steppingstone for me as I am still young and still have much time to grab better opportunity in the future.
Second, I understand from the website, that most of the students here are international students. To me this is convenience, because I am surrounded by friends who also face the same condition with me, which English is not their mother tongue, so I don't need to feel shy to talk using my Indonesian dialect, not like Australian one. This also means that Holmes staff understand and care to the need of international student; this generates my third reason. The next reason is why I feel Holmes suits me best, my sister told me that the campus is not big, which is good for me, so I am not going to get lost in the middle of somewhere. Nevertheless, it has enough facilities as I need. I do not need a luxury campus with its premium student lounge, the facilities are enough, and I am OK with it. My agent also informs me that Holmes is in a premium location in a CBD, in front of the campus, there is a beautiful garden, where I can enjoy the fresh air. Very interesting! It is also close to the state library, where I can get additional study resources when I need them. From its website, Holmes has run its operations for more than 50 years with 3 campuses in Australia, so I believe on its experience in the education excellency, as well as I believe, as an institution that runs a program for international students - under government approval, Holmes surely follows the quality that Australian Government requested accordingly. Otherwise, the MPA program will not be accredited by MPA, or CMA.
Regarding the living arrangement, I have some options in my mind. The first option maybe I will rent an apartment in Docklands area where it is not too far from Holmes campus. It is only about 15 minutes by free city circle tram and the area is also convenience; this information I got from my sister who has explored the alternative for me. I also have searched the rent fee which is around Aud. 300 - 350 per week for a shared apartment. I also have another alternative to rent an apartment near Caufield, close to the train station, the rent is even cheaper, Aud. 290 per week including bill, owned by Indonesian couple. The lady told me that I only need to walk about 7 minutes to train station and stop at Flagstaff Station and walk for about 5 minutes to Holmes Campus at Spring Street.
As for my future work plan, I'm hoping I could work in big business consulting companies in Indonesia. Such as FTI consulting firm, which is a global business advisory firm. There are also three consulting firms regarded as the Big Three in the world, McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, and Boston Consulting Group, which exist in Indonesia. They become one of my many considerations for my future plan. With the "Managing across the borders" unit that I can take at Holmes, I think it will benefit me.
After considering the above facts, I decided to choose Australia and Holmes Institute.
I can confirm, as I mentioned earlier, that as soon as I completed my study, I will go back to Indonesia, this is only for temporary permit to stay for study purpose. There is a very strong culture in Asian countries, and in my family as well, parent should be taken care by their daughter, in this case is me, as I am the youngest daughter in a family. I believe you will consider this application favourably. I look forward to hearing good news from you. Thank you
Sincerely,
