Summary and Purpose of Assessment:

The following assessment task is two of two assessments for UnitsVU22414Engage with a range of complex texts for learning purposes andVU22419 Create a range of complex texts for learning purposes.The task is related to the work you have been doing reading and analysingdifferent structurally complex texts, e.g. persuasive, informative, analytical, instructional texts,paper-based and digital articles focused on education and teaching related areas.

This task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of:

a range of styles of writing and presenting information to a range of audiences

register to enable appropriate selection and application to context

a broad vocabulary and a range of grammatical structures

how to structure a range of texts

Completing this assessment task allows you to demonstrate your ability to locate, read, interpret, and evaluate information. The task is focused on learning the structure and purpose of complex texts for research purposes.

The assessment task is in three parts:

PART A Research

PART B Childrens Book Review (600 words)

PART C Digital Book poster

Completing this assessment task allows you to demonstrate your ability tolocate, read, interpret, and evaluate information in a range of book reviews. The task is focused on learning the structure and purpose of a review and the power of language through reading widely.

Assessment instructions

The student has been asked to assist the school librarian in choosing books for the school library. This will require some research to be carried out of book reviews for three books that have been published in the last 10 years. A book will be required to be selected for each of the reading levels listed below.

Select ONE book to write your own review (600-word approx.).

Create a digital poster for chosen book for the school librarian to place in the library.

Complete the following tasks.

PART AResearch

Write guided responses to three childrens books and book reviews. One book for each of the three reading levels including beginning, emergent and fluent readers. The reviews may be sourced from digital or paper sources but must have been published within the last ten years.

Justify yourthreechildren's book choices, using the information from the books and book reviews you found.

Using the Guided response templates in Appendix One to capture your research.

Source a rangeof reviews foreach of the followinglevels:

Beginning readers up to Year 2(aged up to seven years approx.)

Emergent readers, Year 2-5(aged seven to ten years approx.)

Fluent Readers Year 5-8(aged ten to thirteen years approx.)

PART BChildrens Book Review (600 words)

Write a book review for one of the books.

Using completed research documented in the forms in Appendix one, choose one book to write a 600-word book review.

OR an alternative fourth book may be chosen, but it must fit the criteria of the being published in last 10 years and be suitable for one of the three reading categories.

The book review must include:

The title and authorand illustrator if appropriate

The publisher and publishing date

The authors purpose for the book and how it was achieved

The audience the book is written for

The features of thetext e.g. Is it a narrative, with orientation, complication, and resolution structure? Or is it an informative, procedural, or persuasivetext? What literary devices have been used by the author?

The authors writingstyle e.g. descriptive, techniques to convey feelings, formal, informal language, tone/register, (happy, funny, sad, serious), uses long complex and/or short sentences to convey mood.

How you would use the book as a classroom tool(be specific in describing activity/ies)

There are three stages to this work, as listed below:

Plan the first draft of your own Childrens Book Review

Write a plan using the Planning template in Appendix Two for yourown Childrens Book Review.

Use dot points for your plan.

Write a Draft Childrens Book review

Using your plan write a DRAFT book review of approximately 600 words.

In your draft remember to consider paragraphing, linking of ideas and register

Bring a hard copy of the DRAFT to class for proof reading/editing workshop & feedback

Proofread your review with a peer in-class using the checklist in Appendix 3

Follow up with teacher feedback on your draft in-class

Submit your annotated DRAFT review and checklist through TURNITIN/CANVAS. Your teacher will provide you with written and /or verbal feedback in-class

Using feedback, write thefinal edited version of your own Childrens book Review

Ensure in your final edited version you have:

Included everything as per plan

Used the teachers draft feedback comments to enhancemeaning and effectiveness

Checked for consistent spelling and useof paragraphsandstandard punctuation

Explained purpose of text, authors intention, commented on age/year level/ reader ability,used specificeducational/literacy termsand vocabulary

Described how you would use the book in the classroom as a literacy tool

Part A Guided Responses & plan from earlier in-class feedback and RESUBMIT to Canvas

PART C Digital Book poster

Create a digital poster promoting your chosen book for the school librarian to use in the school library.

The poster must:

Be appropriate for and appeal to its audience

Be visually appealing and contain brief extracts from your written review

Include - title, author, illustrator, publisher & date, images and add a quote from the book.

Do not include long slabs of text it's a POSTER not a review with a few pictures

Where:

Most of this assessment will be completed independently as direct study whilst peer proof reading and teacher feedback on the plan and Draft review will take place in-class as part of writing workshops so in-class attendance will be required to complete these parts.

Conditions for assessment

This is an individual task.

The length of your Part B Childrens Book Review must be 600 words.

You must submit your DRAFT Book Review via Turnitin, week 14 and the Final book review week 16.

All documents must meet the criteria to the standard described in the Assessment Guide in Section B to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment

This is intended as a written assessment.

Please write your full name on the student version of the assessment task (do not use nicknames or abbreviations)

You will be assessed as satisfactory or not satisfactory

This unit has additional grading attached to meet the VIT accreditation requirements.

Your assessor will complete the grading (PASS or CREDIT) in the table at the end of the Marking Guide in section B. Once you have been assessed as satisfactory.

You can negotiate a suitable time and location for assessment at least one (1) week prior to the assessment taking place.

You must make arrangements with your assessor at least one (1) week prior to the assessment due date if you require special allowance or allowable adjustment (e.g., an extension) to this task

You must complete the task within the maximum allowed duration. This is an individual task that you must complete with minimal support from others (allowed support would be questions related to the location of equipment, resources or clarification of questions.)

You will have two (2) opportunities to resubmit this assessment if deemed unsatisfactory.

All two (2) assessment task outcomes (for these units) must be satisfactory for you to be deemed competent in both units.
