Assignment Task

Task

  • In this task you will complete your own analyses of two sources - one visual and one written - and reflect on the way texts influence the way we make meaning in the world.
  • Item Description
  • Individual or group This is an individual task
  • Format Write your responses in the poster template.
  • Weighting 30%
  • Duration  analysis in poster format - 750 words
  • Due date  Week 10 Sunday, 11:59pm
  • Learning outcomes 4 - demonstrate an ability to read for information.
  • 5 - analyse texts for a multitude of meanings.
  • 6 - communicate ideas in appropriate academic form.
  • 7 - situate texts in their cultural and social context.
  • Analytical Poster
  • Submission: This should be typed into a poster template (see below) and submitted to the Turnitin link below by 11:59 pm on Sunday of Week 10.
  • First, choose two texts that relate to any theme of your choice. One text should be visual (anything image-based) and the other should be a written text of any genre.
  • Be sure to select texts that have not been discussed in class. This is your opportunity to explore something of your choice.
  • If you are unsure about your text selection, check with your tutor in class by week 9.
  • Second, draft an analysis of your texts.
  • This is where most of your marks will come from, so allow most of your time for this step - you need time to think and write.
  • Write a short interpretation/analysis of each text.
  • Then write a more detailed section which explains what happens when you analyse the texts together. Consider things like:
  • How do the two texts connect or link to each other?
  • How do the two texts connect to the theme you have selected.
  • When you analyse the two texts together, how do their meanings change? Do you gain insights into a bigger meaning, or a broader understanding of the theme?
  • Third, bring it together in poster format. What we mean here is an academic poster. If you've never heard of this, don't stress! Here is a definition from the University of Adelaide's Writing Centre (2014):
  • A poster is a visual presentation that showcases your scholarly research. The purpose of a poster is to present a piece of work that colleagues can easily view and which can stimulate an exchange of ideas between the presenter and the audience reading the poster. A poster is different from a paper or talk, and so distinct techniques need to be employed in its preparation.
  • Put simply, a poster is a more visual way of presenting your ideas than an essay. It should still be informative and academic.
