TOPIC 2. Sleep Problems in Early Childhood.
Child sleep problems are among the most common reasons parents seek medical help and they can have significant negative implications for the developing child and the parents. Is there convincing evidence for the contribution of both parent and child characteristics to sleep problems in young children (aged 0-4 years)?
In your review:
1) Review normal developmental sleep expectations for this age-group (briefly defining sleep problems in relation to this) and discuss theoretical explanations for how parent and child characteristics may contribute to child sleep problems.
2) Critically evaluate the research evidence for the contribution of both parent and child characteristics to child sleep problems, making sure to reflect on conceptual and methodological issues in this body of research.
750 per section
Review - It isa survey of previously published research on a topic. It should give an overview of current thinking on the topic. And, unlike an original research article, it will not present new experimental results. Writing a review of literature is to provide a critical evaluation of the data available from existing studies.
Discuss - The discussion section iswhere you delve into the meaning, importance, and relevance of your results. It should focus on explaining and evaluating what you found, showing how it relates to your literature review, and making an argument in support of your overall conclusion.
Critically evaluate - As with 'evaluate', butshowing how judgments vary from different perspectives and how some judgments are stronger than others. This often means creating an objective, reasoned argument for your overall case, based on the evaluation from different perspectives.
