Understanding Education Laws

School leaders must combine legal knowledge with ethical practice when working in the best interest of students, staff, and stakeholders. This often involves presenting the legal framework to various audiences clearly and easily.

In this assignment, you will develop an understanding of landmark case law and demonstrate your knowledge by creating a narrated 6- to 8-minute audiovisual presentation featuring six federal and state laws geared toward a relevant school audience of your choice.

Step 1

Envision a school audience for whom you might present the information (e.g., new teachers, teachers handling disciplinary measures, school board members, student groups, parents/guardians of students with disabilities, etc.).

Step 2

Develop an understanding of landmark case law by reviewing the resources provided in this module and other sources found in the and online. Focus on these topics:

  1. student rights,
  2. teacher rights,
  3. school safety,
  4. discrimination and equitable actions,
  5. special education/disabilities, and
  6. student conduct/discipline.

Work with your mentor to identify one law in each category that is relevant to your chosen audience. The laws should be drawn from a variety of landmark federal cases, special education case law, and state education law.

Review the required readings, the presentation videos, your individual research, and the ACE Quick Guide to Law and Policy for School Leaders to guide your selection.

Step 3

Once you have identified your six laws, outline the following information for each:

  • the name of the law and when it was enacted,
  • the background of why the case was considered,
  • a description of the law itself and why it is important for schoolsa description of how the implementation of the law occurs in schools historically and today, and
  • APA-formatted in-text citations and references.

Step 4

Select a digital tool to create your narrated presentation with supporting slides or other visuals. See potential presentation tools in the ACE Digital Tools Center.

Your presentation should contain a title slide, at least one slide per law, in-text citations, and a slide at the end with an APA-formatted reference list.

A best practice is to compose a script or talking points to use while recording the narration.

Read your script aloud to ensure you will meet the time requirements.

Record your presentation.

Step 4

Informally assess your work using the assignment rubric to ensure youve met all requirements.

Submit your audiovisual presentation using the appropriate assignment submission type (i.e., File Upload or Text Entry) for your product. ACE recommends Kaltura for submitting video assignments regardless of the recording tool.

See the "Submit Kaltura Media to an Assignment" guide for a tutorial.
