MODULE DESCRIPTION
Research is part of the process of developing an enquiring mind. Whether to deepen subject knowledge, write an assignment, or carry out a project, research is fundamental to studying in higher education. The module provides a foundation for the use of relevant numeracy and ICT skills in order to investigate, process, and interpret information in the course of conducting research.
ASSESSMENT TASKS
There is one assignment in 2 parts of 3000 words +/- 10% to be completed in this module:
- Part 1 LO1(Essay) 1000 words +/- 10%
- Part 2 LO2, LO3 and LO4(Project) 2000 words +/- 10%
Total Weighting: 100% Intended Learning Outcomes: 1,2,3 and 4
ASSIGNMENT
Part1: Essay
Explain the nature of research and examinethe principles for conducting good research.
[25 Marks]
Part2: Project
In this assignment, you are required to develop a relevant research topic/title and provide a brief literature
review on the topic. You should refer to GOV.UK, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Statista, JSTOR,
PubMed, or any other reliable database to select your research data relevant to your subject area in Business, International Tourism and Hospitality, or Health and Social Care. The best research questions should also explore the impact of corporations on the creation of sustainable social, environmental, and economic value in the context of the UNPRME Principle 4. Therefore, the projects should incorporate the theme of sustainable social, environmental, and global economic value. Your research should demonstrate
the use of ICT skills such as searching and storing information, the use of appropriate ICT software and
tools, and awareness of information security and privacy. You should be able to search secondary data on the chosen problem using ICT searching skills. The data should be analysed using appropriate numerical and statistical techniques, such as quantitative variables, ratios, and percentages; frequency distribution, Mean, Mode, Median, and Standard Deviation (STD). You should be able to present your results or findings based on the data obtained and create or design your own tables, charts, graphs, and textual formscommunicated in an academic style and interpreted correctly.
Finally, based on your findings, you should make meaningful recommendations showing a full understanding of the chosen topic. Your report should provide a full Harvard reference of all the sources you use and a bibliography.
Marks will be broadly allotted as follows

HELPFUL INFORMATION
Core Texts
Bell, J., Waters, S. (2018), Doing Your Research Project: A Guide for First-Time Researchers. London: Open International Publishing
CGP Books (2016). Functional Skills in ICT. Broughton-in-FuF1 10 (D)-pQ formation
REFERENCING YOUR WORK
References to relevant academic theory and research findings should be provided and cited appropriately using the Harvard system of referencing. The examples of this referencing style are as follows:
Source Type: Book
Pears, R. & Shields, G. (2016) Cite them right: the essential referencing guide. Palgrave study skills. 10th ed. Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan.
Source Type: Journal Article
Petit, C. and Sieffermann, J. (2007) 'Testing consumer preferences for iced-coffee: Does the drinking environment have any influence?', Food Quality and Preference, 18(1), pp.161-172.
Author/s name and initials are listed first, followed by the year of publication in brackets. Then there is the title of the article and the journal where the article appears, which is in italics. Finally, state the volume and issue number (in brackets) along with the pages where the article can be located. Include at least two in-text citations and references in each assessment criterion. Further information on the Harvard System of referencing is on your Canvas.
Note: Do not use Wikipedia as a source of reference.
ACADEMIC MALPRACTICE
You are required to work on the tasks when preparing this assignment independently, and you are reminded of the need to avoid the risk (intentionally or unintentionally) of committing academic malpractice. In particular, presenting another learners work as yours or taking information from any sources without correctly acknowledging the source can constitute academic malpractice. You are expected to submit your work using the Turnitin software that is provided by the school. Please note that your work may be subject to penalties and/or cancellation if academic malpractice has taken place. The Turnitin similarity report can highlight where academic sources have not been referenced appropriately/effectively, and this could result in a concern being highlighted around possible plagiarism (one form of academic malpractice where sources have been used without proper acknowledgement).
Although it is not inappropriate to generate ideas for assignments, presenting an assignment generated solely by Artificial Intelligence (AI) is similar to contract cheating because the work submitted will not be your original work and the academic malpractice policy will apply.
Make sure you read over your work carefully and ensure that all sources of information have been acknowledged to avoid any untoward investigations that would result in a delay in your achievement of the module. Further information on academic malpractice (including plagiarism) and potential consequences are available in your student handbooks.
