Vignette (High School Setting)You are a Year 11 advisor. Parents of a student, Alex, who is in this year group have contacted you about their childs declining academic performance in Earth and Environmental Science and disengagement from school. You carry out enquiries and uncover the following.
1. Alex is passionate about environmental science and wants to pursue a career in this field.
2. Alexs assessment results in the subject for first half of the year for Earth and Environmental Science are exceptional but have declined during the second half of the year.
3. Alex had initial success learning scientific knowledge and procedures through explicit instruction, which the teacher continues to use.
4. Although Alex benefited from explicit instruction, the continued use of this approach has made Alex feel that they are not capable of learning further subject content (i.e., lower self-efficacy) without explicit guidance from the teacher. Moreover, Alex reveals that they are finding it hard to maintain attention because the teacher is providing step-by-step instruction for tasks that they have already mastered leading to redundancy effects.
5. Alexs close friends mention to you that Alex has been subject to consistent bullying, particularly online bullying. The bullying focuses on Alexs apparent late onset puberty and their passion for environmental issues. Alexs identity has been strongly aligned with environmental advocacy, but they are now questioning their identity because of bullying from peers.

b) Developmental Issues Summary- Clearly outline the main developmental issues faced by the student, such as difficulties with specific learning approaches (e.g., inquiry-based learning or explicit instruction), effects of lowered self-efficacy or expectancies for success, and the impact of bullying on the students school identity and social interactions.
