Part 1: Case study 1 and assessment questions
Case study 1 stimulus
You are assisting in coordinating a weekend workshop on printmaking as part of the Xplore program that Indigo offers to young people. Caitlin is one of the members of the newly formed group. When you meet Caitlin, you note that she has lots of tattoos and piercings in comparison to the other young people around her.
Caitlin is very withdrawn in her interaction with others. You try to initiate some one-on-one time with her, but she is not really interested and concentrates on writing her song. It is a hot summer afternoon, and you notice Caitlin is still wearing her large, hooded jumper and long tights. At one point she pushes up her sleeve and you catch sight of scarring and what looks like recent red cut marks on her arm. You know that self-harm is more prevent in young people than adults.
You check Caitlins intake and referral information and note the referral to your centre was from the local government housing community development worker Sabrina. You decide to give her a call to discuss further information. Sabrina has a written consent from Caitlin allowing her to discuss her case with you, and says she is unaware of any history of self-harm although she doesnt know her very well. Sabrina also says that she was trying for several months to engage Caitlin in activities and the referral to our program was the first time she had been responsive.
Sabrina said Caitlin lived with her father but hardly ever saw him around the housing flats. You find Caitlin's father's contact details as the emergency contact on her referral form and try to call him to discuss the matter however he doesn't answer so you leave a message for him to call you back.
Caitlin is standing back watching a group of young people interacting and enjoying the art making down the other end of the large art space. You notice the red marks on her arm again and think to yourself that you should check in on her as you are genuinely concerned for physical health and wellbeing. However, before you get a chance to approach Caitlin, you see that she has already left the art room.

Case study 2 stimulus
You are working as a Youth Worker at Indigo Community Services and Health Hub (Indigo) in the region in which you live and have been working with Easton, a 16-year-old male.
Easton grew up in a government housing estate with his mother and 3 younger siblings. His father identifies as being Aboriginal and has had irregular participation in Eastons family life. For the last 2 years, Easton has seen his father (who now lives interstate), once or twice a year for a week at a time. Easton has not identified as Aboriginal to date but has hinted he is confused and unsure about this part of his life.
Midway through last year, Easton disengaged from school as he was not doing well with his grades, shortly after he started smoking marijuana and in the last couple of months, Easton started smoking Ice (methamphetamine). 2 months ago Eastons mother asked him to move to his uncles house because of his drug use. Easton has been staying with his uncle although things have not been going well. During this period Easton was referred to Indigo by a doctor at the local community health centre and was assessed as being anxious and having depression. During this assessment, Easton stated he is Not interested in taking medication for his mental health, I only agreed to the referral to Indigo because Sally (his mental health nurse) suggested it would be a good idea and I like that I can play pool at Indigo. The last time you met with Easton he told you that he had discontinued his Ice usage although he said: Im tempted to fall down the hole again.
Recently you have been concerned about Eastons wellbeing as he has stopped coming to his scheduled appointments for case management and engagement in other services. He also did not turn up for his second Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) counselling appointment. Now you have heard through other young people who attend Indigo that he is staying with family friends on the other side of the city.
Today Easton shows up at Indigo. You observe from a distance that his body language and facial expressions indicate he may be under the influence of something. Easton quickly avoids Indigo staff and goes to the recreation room. You notify your colleagues and start preparing for a response in the case that Easton is under the influence.

Part 3: Case study 3 and assessment questions
Case study 3 stimulus
You are working as a Youth Worker at Indigo Community Services and Health Hub (Indigo) in the region in which you live where you meet Jamie Williams, a 15-year-old male. Jamie was referred to Indigo by his high school teacher as she noticed that he had been becoming increasingly disengaged during lessons and had been frequently missing school.
Jamie grew up in a volatile household as his father passed away at a young age and his mother was diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Being the eldest child, Jamie took on the role of being the primary caretaker for his younger sisters and brothers. For the last 3 years, Jamie and his siblings were taken in by their Aunty Hunny as their mother required ongoing care and support.
Over the last year, Jamie has turned to excessive drinking and smoking weed as he feels it is the only time he can shut off from the problems in his life. As a result of this, Jamie's school grades have significantly dropped which has led him to further disengage. During the assessment Jamie expressed that he was not interested in finishing school as he didnt care and there was no point because he didn't know what he wanted to do in the future. You ask Jamie about his current home situation where he reveals that when he does stay over at his Aunty's apartment, he often sleeps on the couch or in a sleeping bag because of the limited space. Noticing that he said, 'when he stays over', you ask him to further explain what he means where he reveals that his Aunty has been nagging him to either go back to school and stop drinking or move out if he doesnt stop as she is getting fed up with his behaviour.
Jamie expresses his desire to stop drinking and smoking habits and he has tried multiple times however the withdrawals have led him to engaging in aggression with the people around him. He also communicates that over the past years he has neglected playing cricket, a sport that he loves and wishes to get back into. Not having clarity as to what the future holds, he often finds himself drawn back to these habits and has turned to you for help as he knows a change needs to be made.
