University of South Australia

The scenario

A regional town in Australia has been badly affected by recent floods. However, this experience is not particular to this town alone, as there are many other communities affected by floods, bush fires, and cyclones regularly. People are becoming increasingly aware of climatic change and its repercussions on human and ecological well-being. It is a human crisis for the human species (Naomi Klien, 2014).

You are employed as a community worker in the local council. You and other council community workers from nearby communities are meeting with residents who want to discuss what can be done locally to cope with floods the next time they occur, and what can be done more broadly to develop strategies to switch to renewable energy sources to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Regarding the floods, the council had already undertaken an evaluation of preparedness and responses. The councilors had stated that there was nothing more that could be done about either the floods or climate change. Yet, residents and community development workers disagreed with this verdict and decided to convene a meeting with residents to do more. The group of residents and workers started searching the existing literature and websites to gather information about ways of responding to climate change. They narrowed the possible options down to three broad goals they might choose to start working on.

These include:

control of energy resources to move towards using renewable energy sources;

initiate a social action to advocate for policy and legislative changes;

work towards sustainable practices to prevent climate change and towards community recovery and well-being aftermath of disasters such as floods, fires, and devastating cyclones.

Your task is to choose two of the goals above and to analyse examples of community-led initiatives where communities have taken action to achieve these goals.

You may use the template below to structure your project analysis and plan.

left280670This section includes an analysis of the impact of climatic conditions on the population group, communities, and society in general.

Use small paragraphs for each point to describe:

Who the affected people, places, and communities are (e.g. individuals, a group, a business)

What are their experiences of disadvantage, discrimination, and oppression?

What is the evidence of human rights violation, exclusion, and marginalisation?

Finish this section by summarising the need for change.

Minimum 4 references from academic sources.

Use Harvard style for referencing.

Section 1 Analysis of the Climate issue

Section 2

This section requires you to select two objectives/goals from the above case scenario (see three goals listed within the case scenario),

and research existing projects/campaigns on climate change that has some resemblance to the selected objectives. This task involves

1.Choose two of the projects/campaigns to pursue in detail from the list of community based projects on climate change given under the assessment tab.

2.Perform some research to find relevant examples of current projects/campaigns that have looked to achieve similar goals in other communities.

3.Describe these examples and explain the relevance of these projects to inform your local version of the project

To structure your answer write two short paragraphs to introduce two selected community development projects on climate change.

Project 1 (Title)

Project 2 (Title)

Include the following in the description:

Describe the background, and specific purpose/focus of the project to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Describe the location, key features, and people involved.

Describe resources such as funding arrangement

You must provide a weblink to access the selected project.

Word count 400 words

0339725This section requires you to identify and critically examine community development principles, approaches, roles, and skills used in each of the projects. This could be achieved by examining the strengths and weaknesses of the projects, strategies, processes used, and roles played by various stakeholders.

Project 1

Which model of community development has been used?

What values/principles guided the project development?

Which strategies/approaches were used to work with people?

What roles and skills were adopted by the community worker?

What led to the success of the project outcome?

What did not work well?

What lessons were learned for future programs?

Project 2

Which model of community development has been used?

What values/principles guided the project development?

Which strategies/approaches were used to work with people?

What roles and skills were adopted by the community worker?

What led to the success of the project outcome?

What did not work well?

What lessons were learned for future programs?

Note

You may not be able to find answers to all the questions on the project website, however, you must pay attention to some keywords used to describe the project approach and outcomes. Apply a critical lens to ask questions about power relations, the decision-making process, and inclusive and exclusionary approaches as evident in the project. You may critique a model or approach and its suitability to achieve the goal. Make sure that you are analysing the project based on the knowledge obtained from the course readings. We are interested to know that you have understood key concepts and their relevance in community development work.

Minimum 4 references from academic sources.

Use Harvard style for referencing.

You may include these questions as sub headings to aalyse the projects.

Section 3-Critical analysis of the CD approaches utilised in the projects

0315807This section requires you to use critical thinking on barriers and benefits in the existing projects/campaigns based on your knowledge of community development processes, values, roles, and skills learned in this course module.

Based on the analysis of the projects and lessons learnt from each of the projects, write two paragraphs delineating how would you work with the community and what would you adopt from the projects and change based on what you now know about community development work. You will need to think about and demonstrate your knowledge of community development approaches, principles, and roles that you will assume to work alongside the community to enable them to reach their goals chosen above.

Note:

Use of first-person will be accepted in this section.
