Assignment 2 is an end-of-semester assessment. Brief feedback will be provided via the following mechanisms:

Individual feedback: mark-up of therubric.

Individual feedback: a comment from your marker about 1 item to focus on in your future practice.

Assignment template:

For your final submission, please submit your assignment using theassignment templateDownload assignment templatefile. This file contains the marking rubric and it will facilitate marking in the online system. Please note:when submitting your final assignment, the plagiarism detection software will flag the entire marking rubric. As a result, your similarity score will be artificially inflated. I recommend that you prepare a draft of your assignment on a separate document and submit it to thePre-submission Plagiarism Checklink.

Purpose

This assignment will provide you the opportunity to further develop your skills in linear regression, Chi-square analysis, and non-parametric analysis.

Description

You will perform statistical analyses on three questions. Statistical analyses will include selecting the most appropriate analysis method / hypothesis test, performing descriptive statistics (where relevant), stating and checking assumptions, performing appropriate estimations (where relevant), and performing hypothesis testing. You are expected to present your analyses in a scientific manner. This means that figures and tables should be formatted appropriately (with captions/titles and axis labels) and written text should guide your reader through your analyses, justifications, and interpretations.

Note on assumptions: if your assumptions are violated, you may proceed with the most appropriate hypothesis test relative to content in Learning Modules Week 6 and later. If assumptions are violated, you are required to report on the potential consequences and how you would overcome the violation(s) in future practice.

Questions

Question 1

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a chemical which was historically used in to fight fires at airports and Defence bases. In recent years, PFOS has been identified as a contaminant of concern which may impact human health. Routine monitoring of 50 public water drinking sources across the USA identified that PFOS chemicals were present. The Australian Water Association (AWA) wants to understand if the levels of PFOS in Australian water supplies is lower than in the United States (US) due to fewer aviation facilities being located near public drinking water sources. To study this, AWA requested water quality monitoring data for 50 Australian public drinking water sources from across Australia. Use the data in the Q1_PFOS sheet and an alpha of 0.01 to determine if the concentration of PFOS in Australian drinking water was less than in the US.

Question 2

Tinnitus, commonly called ringing in the ears, is a common condition where individuals hear sounds, such as constant ringing or buzzing in their ear, but no external noise is responsible for the sounds. The presence of tinnitus had been thought to be the key symptom for people who had vestibular schwannoma (VS), a non-cancerous tumour on the balance portion of the vestibulocochlear nerve which is responsible for hearing and balance. A British study of 85 patients identified thattinnitus and hearing losswere noticed in 72% of people who were diagnosed with VS.Tinnitus onlywas observed in (14%),tinnitus, hearing loss and balance issueswas observed in (8%), and the remaining 6% of people hadno symptomsindicative of VS. The WA Health Department wanted to see if these findings from the British study were applicable to Western Australia. The Health Department collected information from 85 patients about the symptoms experienced before being diagnosed with VS during 2021 and 2022. The results from this study are in the Q3_VS sheet of your data file. Using alpha = 0.01, assess whether the WA results are statistically equivalent to the British study.

Question 3

Many households in Perth have solar panels providing some or all of their electricity needs each day. The growth in the uptake of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Perth has thought to have been driven government incentives reducing the price and high levels of global solar radiation (watts per square metre W/m2). Researchers wanted to understand what climate variables could be used to predict future average global solar radiation, which could be used to assess future viability of PV installations in Perth considering climate change. Historical studies suggested that temperature (C), humidity (%) and wind speed (km/hour) have been successful at modelling global solar radiation in sub-tropical regions. To determine if these variables could be used to predict global solar radiation levels in a Mediterranean climate, researchers used data from the official Perth weather station for 2022.

(a) Use the data in the Q3_Solar sheet, with alpha = 0.05, to determine whether global solar radiation for Perth can be predicted from the above-mentioned variables. Which, if any, of the independent variables listed contribute significantly to this prediction?

(b) Write the model equation and use it to predict the global solar radiation for a 20C Day with 56% humidity and 10.9 km/hour winds. Include the prediction interval in your answer.
