This is an academic essay which you will write at Level 5 (refer to the Undergraduate level descriptors in CANVAS). The following information provides you with some guidance and tips for undertaking this summative task. Your work will be submitted in CANVAS. You can up-load your script into the submission folder at any time, prior to the deadline. Within this forum you are able to keep changing your submission up until the last minute just before 2pm, but we would strongly encourage you to not leave this until the last minute. So, if you have any doubts about your PC, your competence and so on, then you can test these out months in advance and seek the necessary IT support if required.

Please refer to the University regulations on granting extensions. If you do need an extension, you will need to apply for this via your e-vision account. Dont forget if you are experiencing difficulties speak to your module iteration leader or personal tutor, at the earliest opportunity.

The assignment is intended to offer you the opportunity to focus on an area of choice/particular interest, from the topics covered in the module within the framework of the title below. It is important that you address the module learning outcomes in your work whilst doing this.

Summative Assessment: Coursework Essay 3000 words (Weighting 100%)

The essay topic title is:

Critically discuss the meaning of mental health and ill-health, along with the management and promotion of wellbeing and recovery.

You will note the title is quite broad, thus you may tackle it as such OR you may focus it on a specific area (discuss with your iteration lead).

You will present an essay that enables you to focus on a topic of interest to you from those explored within the module. For example, you may choose to focus on depression or dementia to address the above. You may further focus on a particular group, so for example you could look at depression in women and consider this in relation to wellbeing and recovery.

You must address the 4 learning outcomes and we would also like you to define and critically discuss the meaning of mental health and ill-health, along with wellbeing and recovery in your essay. Again, either more broadly or in line with your chosen focus.

To help you develop your ideas and focus for the assignment we will have dedicated time in class and you will also have a formative opportunity to gain valuable feedback.

Assignment Information & Marking Criteria (what we are looking for when we mark)

1: Ensure the essay has a clear introduction developments and conclusion that is within the required word limit (3000).

2: LO1- Have you demonstrated the following:

Examined and evaluated 1 or 2 (relevant) perspectives in understanding the concept of mental health and ill-health in relation to the topic?

3: LO2- Have you appraised theory and evidence to demonstrate an understanding of multidisciplinary approaches to meeting mental health needs in relation to the topic?

4: LO3 Have you demonstrated a critical appraisal/understanding of some of the diverse nature of determinants to mental health and well-being and applied to your topic/discussion?

5: LO4 Does your discussion explore contemporary issues/debate in mental health care, drawing on research, legislation and policy frameworks that are relevant to your topic?

6: Have you provided a clear and succinct conclusion that summarizes the main points discussed and draws your work to a close?

7: Does your work draws on a range of academic sources (do not use non-credible websites), throughout the essay?

Have you correctly used the Cite them Right Harvard System of Referencing within the essay script?

Is your Reference list is correctly organised according to the Harvard System and is in alphabetical order according to the first Authors family name?
