Assignment Brief:

You recently submitted a job application for a Department Manager role at a full-service luxury hotel operated by an international hotel company. Your job application has been shortlisted and you are being considered for the role. If you are successful in gaining the position, one of your responsibilities will be to appear in short training and information videos that will be posted on the global intranet site of the international hotel company. The videos are viewed by IHG employees and managers around the world as part of a strategy to enhance knowledge transfer within the organisation.

Accordingly, as part of the recruitment process, you have been asked to submit a short video addressing the tasks listed on the final page of this document. The General Manager (GM) of the hotel wants to see the video that you produce before deciding whether to offer you a job interview, so you should deliver a high quality presentation in order to impress the GM.

Video Requirements:

The video (MP4 format) you produce must be 6 minutes long, with a 10% leeway (10% of 6 minutes is 36 seconds, so your video can be over or under 6 minutes by 36 seconds). Note that the marker will stop watching your video at 6 minutes 36 seconds, so anything included after this point will not be considered for marking.

Your video must include a PowerPoint (PPT) slide show along with a video of you delivering the oral presentation. Your whole face must be visible in the camera shot at all times during the recorded presentation.

Your PPT slide show must be appropriately designed choose a consistent design theme throughout the presentation. Pay particular attention to your own personal delivery of the spoken content you should sound professional, knowledgeable and engaging. Note that the marking rubric puts substantial weight on the support materials (i.e., PPT slides and overall video quality) and the personal delivery (i.e., not obviously reading, confidence with the content, engaging to listen to). To earn good marks you need to demonstrate conceptual understanding, practical application to the hotel industry and good presentation skills. Try to impress the GM dont bore them through an unengaging presentation.

Before your response to each task, include a slide that shows the specific tasks you are responding to (for these slides, use the exact task wording, do not summarise it). Pay attention to the concepts that are bolded and underlined in the set of tasks that you must respond to. As part of your presentation, you should explain what these concepts mean in the context of financial/management accounting for the hotel industry.

Include APA-style in-text references on each PPT slide when you are sourcing your ideas/information from your own independent research/reading. You do not need to reference the course material or textbook if you are referring to information included in the course. Include a reference list in APA format in a slide at the end of the PPT presentation. Ensure the reference list is recorded for at least 5 seconds in the video, but you do not need to speak to the reference list slide. Include a minimum of three academic peer-reviewed references from tourism or hospitality academic journals. You can also cite websites etc., but these do not count towards the minimum of 3 academic references required for this assignment.

See the course L@G site for further information on submission requirements and marking criteria for this assessment item. There is a 38 second video showing you how to upload via Studio this is a requirement ensure you watch this video before submitting and follow the instructions. It is very important that you follow the submission instructions carefully, as non-compliance will result in delays in marking your assignment as well as reduced marks, or possibly even zero marks for A1.

On the following page, you will find the tasks that you must respond to in your A1 Individual Video Report. This set of tasks is unique to you. Every other student in this course has a different combination of tasks.

Your A1 Tasks:

Task #1

Choose a hotel in Sydney in Australia that is operated by a hotel brand within the Accor hotel groups portfolio of hotel brands. Assume the hotel is operated under a management contract between Accor and a private hotel owner. Assume Accor is interested in maintaining its brand reputation, and assume the hotel owner is interested in maximising return on investment. Explain how the competing interests of Accor and the hotel owner could impact on the guest experience at your chosen hotel.

Task #2

Imagine you are the Food & Beverage Director at an upscale hotel in a busy metropolitan location. Your hotel is operated under a well-known international hotel brand. The General Manager of your hotel has asked you to implement a performance measurement system that will best appraise and enhance performance in the F&B Department. Outline some key issues involved in designing an effective performance management system, and give practical examples of how these issues could be addressed in a performance management system for your F&B Department.

Task #3

Identify and describe the internal control weaknesses in this situation: The manager of the RitzyRooftop Bar is responsible for purchasing bar stock, authorising bar purchase invoices for payment, banking daily cash takings and overseeing periodic counts of the bar inventory. The manager has a manual system for raising and recording invoices and receipts, and the manager is the only staff member who inputs the manual records into the bars accounting system.
