You will also gain knowledge and skills about processes and strategies to improve patient safety (learning outcome 4) so that you can reflect on your own clinical practice to ensure patient safety.

Task Description:

For this task you need to write a 1500 word essay in which you reflect on and critique a case study about teamwork, and conflict resolution, and make recommendations on what should be done to minimise the negative impact on patient safety.

Task Instructions:

  1. You need to have completed course modules 1 & 2 before you attempt this assessment

  1. Watch and critique the case study depicted in the video As you watch the video, pay attention to issues around teamwork and conflict resolution. The short video is about communication between critical care nurses and an intensive care junior doctor. The short video has two parts: part 1 is the beginning of the scenario, and part 2 is the end of the scenario, which has three different ends (the video is the product of an international collaborative teaching project Drama in Acute and Critical Care between staff from Griffith University, Australia, and University of Gothenburg, Sweden).

  1. Watch part 1 of the scenario then While you are watching, please consider the following questions and write down your thoughts:

    • Consider why the doctor, Barry, may have behaved the way he

    • If you were the junior nurse Sharon, what would you have done when the resident told you I have prescribed the medication, and could you please just go ahead and give it the way I ordered it?

    • If you were the junior nurse Sharon, what do you think would happen at the point the film ends?

    • If you were the patient, how would you feel and what would you wish the nurse and the doctor to do instead?

  1. Continue watching part 2: versions 1, 2, and Stop after you have watched each version. Think about the following questions for each version:

Part 2 Version 1:

  • Describe the communication between the doctor and the What were the possible reasons for the way they communicated?

  • What were the possible consequences of poor communication?

  • What were the possible consequences of not speaking up if you were one of the nurses and you were concerned about patient safety?

Part 2 Version 2:

  • Describe the way Barry communicated with the nurses, including Sharon, and Why did he behave the way he did? What should he have done?

  • Describe the way Sharon communicated with Why do you think she behaved the way she did? What she should have done?

  • What could Josh have done to change the situation (and avoid escalating the conflict)?

  • What were the consequences of this communication?

Part 2 Version 3:

  • Describe the way Barry communicated with the nurses, including Sharon, Josh, and Vicky. Why did Barry behave the way he did? What should he have done?

  • Was there a difference in Barrys attitude when he spoke to the nurses Sharon and Vicky? Why?

  1. Read the supplementary resource on conflict

  1. Now, write an essay to critique the scenario. In your essay you need to:

a)Reflect upon, critique and discuss the main issues you identified in the video that might impact patient Your reflection will be based on part 1 with one version of part 2.
