A Practical Application of Operational Research for Decision Making in Logistics.
Objective:
This assignment aims to assess students' understanding and application of operational research
methods in logistics. By critically analysing their practical application and solving a real-world
logistics problem, students will demonstrate proficiency in operational research techniques,
modelling, and decision-making under uncertainty.
Tasks (All tasks are equally weighted):
Critically analyse the application of the operational research methods in logistics and give
examples of different ways in which these methods can be used to make management decisions.
You are also required to solve one of the real-world problems in logistics using operational
research methods.
Project Phases:
1. Critically analyse the practical application of Operational research methods in logistics (LO1).
Give examples of the application of different Operational research methods in logistics.
Critically evaluate how these methods help to make an informed management decision
under conditions of risk and uncertainty.
Analyse the importance of obtaining the initial data, formulating constraints and verifying
the results of modelling for an informed management decision.
2. Select one real-world logistics problem and solve it using the most appropriate method from
the list (linear programming, transportation problem, assignment problem, network
programming methods) (LO2, LO3).
Provide a description of the real-world logistics problem from the specific company of
your choice.
Formulate the problem in the form of a mathematical model, describe the variables,
function, and the required constraints of your model.
Solve the problem analytically or using the software tools, provide a description of the
solution algorithm, and accompany it with relevant tables and figures.
Submission Instructions:
Compile a comprehensive essay, include all relevant tables and figures to support
the description of the real-world problem solving.
Ensure that your essay is clear, well-organized, and visually appealing.
