A reflection on advocating and consumer partnerships
Guidelines
Identify a consumer you have worked with who is trying to self-advocate or needing you to advocate for them. This advocacy may have occurred as part of your professional life and/or personal life. Write up their story and, using the literature, identify what it means to both the consumer and the healthcare worker to support therapeutic relationships and advocate for someone. Make recommendations for best practice about how to conduct advocacy work with consumers.
Your report should include the following items:
-
Introduction. Introduce your assignment and clearly state its aims.
-
Case study narrative. Write up a case studystyle narrative of this situation of advocacy so that the reader is able to obtain a snapshot of what occurred.
-
Literature. Search the literature to identify articles that inform you about advocacy in mental health and the role of the consumer and the healthcare worker. Use this literature to write up your assignment. You may want to use subheadings for this section to address the consumer and the healthcare worker or you may write this as a shared experience under the one major heading.
-
Recommendations. Now that you have read and interpreted the available literature, write up recommendations for practice. You may want to discuss how advocacy should be conducted after this reading.
-
Conclusion. Conclude your paper and provide a reference list.
-
Reference list. All references are to follow the APA 7th edition referencing style. Students are encouraged to paraphrase sources of material through the use of their own words wherever possible. Excessive use of direct quotes may result in a decreased grade. Non-acknowledgement of other authors is considered plagiarism according to University Policy and will result in a fail grade.
You should use third person academic writing.
