Ethical Research Proposal 2023-24

TRAINEE TEACHER (STUDENT) DETAILS

Name: Nazeefah

Student number:

University of Greenwich email:

PROPOSED TITLE OF RESEARCH:

What are the impact of poverty in education?

British Educational Research Association [2018] BERA Ethical Guidelines for Educational Research available here and British Psychological Society Code of Human Research Ethics [2021]

1| What aspect of primary education do you plan to research?

The impact of poverty in education

2| Why do you want to focus on this:

-personally? I grew up in a deprived neighbourhood and saw the effects of poverty in school.

-professionally? I have taught in schools that are located in deprived areas and children are from ethnic minority backgrounds3| Where do you plan to undertake your research?

In school

4 Who will be involved? [which year group, pupils specifically and why?] How will you choose the pupils?

Class teachers 1 from EYFS, 1 from KS1, 1 from KS2 and the deputy head or assistant head (whoever is available)

5 When will you be undertaking your research?

During research week in SE3

6| The chosen methodology is Case Study. Why does this methodology suit the research you are proposing?

The application of the case study approach is especially beneficial for gaining a comprehensive understanding of a topic, occurrence, or phenomenon of interest within its actual, real-world circumstances. Which in my instance is the effect of poverty within the educational environment.

7| What Methods will you use? What actions will you be taking? Why have you chosen these methods? What are the limitations? What sort of questions will you be asking? What are the ethical issues and how will you address them?

Chosen method Quantitative and/or Qualitative results? Reason for choosing this method?

[e.g. Was it used in any of the literature you have read?] Limitations of the method?

Interviews

(with teachers)

Record interview on a device (using voice recorder software on windows). Take notes and transcribe the interview myself Qualitative It will help me in comprehending individual experiences, obstacles, and viewpoints regarding the influence of poverty on education. Provides detailed qualitative data. Helps to clarify any information. Time consuming and risk of interviewer bias.

What are the ethical issues linked to the methods you will use and how will you address them? E.g. Group interviews; timings; personal questions, sensitive questions. what are the ethical considerations for any actions you will undertake?

Ethical issues can occur regarding consent and respecting the privacy of teachers, children and even the school environment. Concealing the identity of individuals is very important so employing pseudonyms will help solve this ethical issue and personal information should be kept private and secured. Ethical issues in regard to literature review is ensuring citations are proper and correct to avoid plagiarism. Biasness can also be an ethical issue therefore, it is important to display a comprehensive and unbiased set of information.

[If applicable] What questions will you be asking in an interview or in a survey? [Please copy in your proposed questions]. If you are doing an observation, then provide your observation schedule.

How would you describe poverty within the educational environment and impact of it on the educational system?

What challenges do you think children who are from disadvantaged backgrounds face in terms of education?

Have you faced any personal experiences and observations of the impact and effects of poverty in education?

Does poverty affect childrens access to educational resources and support?

Have you seen a difference in terms of education from deprived areas and more prestigious areas? (If theyve taught in multiple places)

How do you think poverty affects a childs development and ability to learn and succeed within the educational environment?

Are there any specific obstacles that children from ethnic minorities or disadvantaged areas face?

What support do you think is most effective for children that are from disadvantaged backgrounds?

Have you seen pr employed any effective strategies or interventions for children who are impacted by poverty?

How can schools and teachers help children overcome the effects of poverty within their education and minimise the impact?

What improvements or changes can be made to schools to make it more inclusive for all children?

How do you think the impact and effects of poverty in education may affect a childs future and life opportunities?

8| Consent of Parents - How do you plan to gain the consent of parents? The parents need to opt in. Make reference to Appendix 1 and/or Appendix 2 of this proposal form [the letters you are sending to parents]. If you do not need to use the generic letter for access to data, then just indicate as N/A for Appendix 1.

9| Voluntary Participation of Pupils/Students - how will you ensure that your students have voluntarily offered to participate and are not coerced? Make reference to Appendix 3 of this proposal form [the letter you are sending to participants]. If you are not providing a letter [e.g. If they are too young to read], how will you gain their consent?

[NB Even for very young children, a sheet with smiley faces can be used. Providing a script with the relevant information as well as smiley faces would be a good idea for Appendix 3.]

10 If you are interviewing children, you MUST list intended questions here. Consider their place in your research.

11| Data Protection - what strategies do you propose for storing, protecting, and disposing of the information you collect in the course of this research?

[NB Detail where your data will be stored. It should be on the university or institutional cloud or locked cupboard on school premises. Please provide as much specific detail as possible.] When can participants withdraw their consent/data? When will you delete the data?

Using pseudonyms where possible. Ensuring there is no unauthorised access to my university drive. Use strong passwords and two factor authentication if possible. Ensure participants are informed of a clear policy of how long data will be stored after the research project is completed. Shred and physical forms of data and information and ensure any digital data or information is cleared and deleted in a secure manner. I will delete the data on 31/08/2024.

12| Anonymity how will you ensure that the data you collect is not traceable to the

provider or the pupils/students?

A useful explanation of confidentiality verses anonymity may be found at https://methods.sagepub.com/reference/the-sage-encyclopedia-of-communication-research-methods/i3126.xml

Using pseudonyms

13| Confidentiality how will you ensure that you can adhere to confidentiality?

A useful explanation of confidentiality verses anonymity may be found at https://methods.sagepub.com/reference/the-sage-encyclopedia-of-communication-research-methods/i3126.xml

i will clearly explain to participants how the research i do will be used, stored and protected. ensure to get permission before collecting data, explaining my data policy alongside this. Ensure there is password protection and the data stays encrypted with only access for authorised personnel. use secure programmes to transfer any data. adhere to regulations such as GDPR. make sure i am continuously monitoring the access to my data etc. keep open communication with the participants about everything, informing them about confidentiality and potential risks that could occur.

14| How will you disseminate your findings with others? E.g. will you share with SLT of the school you are placed in?

[NB Please note that you should not share raw data, only the finished project.]

Recognise the people that will most benefit from the research I have accumulated. Share information with school leadership teams, teachers and any other educational organisations that are local. This could help influence the development of school changes and educational policies targeting the issues related to poverty and education. Planning presentations for teachers could help disseminate research information and help discover strategies that can be used within schools to support children affected by poverty. Ensure there is consent for sharing from participants and conceal identities.

15| Identify up to four texts that have informed your approach to research and choice of research methods. Place in HARVARD format

17a) What do you consider to be the main risks to participants(e.g. distress, embarrassment, health and safety, safeguarding, reputational risk of those interviewing) and how will you address the risks?

Safeguarding I will ensure to respect the privacy of each individual and anonymise their identity and protect their personal data.

Distress/anxiety - When talking about personal experiences with poverty or difficulties in school, participants may feel uncomfortable or anxious. Therefore, I will do my best to create a safe environment which supports them. And reassure them that if they feel uncomfortable or would like to withdraw from my research project they can do so.

17b) What do you consider to be the main risks to you as a researcher (e.g. distress, embarrassment, health and safety, safeguarding) and how will you address the risks?

Distress I will ensure to put my self-care first and take care of my wellbeing and ensure this doesnt negatively impact my mental health.

Embarrassment Communicating with participants may feel a bit apprehensive so ensuring a safe and supporting environments for all of us will make this easier.

Ethical issues Ensure when collecting data I am doing it in the most secure way and taking enough precautions whilst carrying out my research project. Analysing any potential risks that may occur etc.

Lack of empathy or too much Ensure I am keeping an appropriate rapport between me and the participants of my research project but also making sure I am being sensitive towards any topics we discuss keeping respectful communication throughout.
