Assessment Overview
This is the second of two assessments for this course, and it is based on the case study used in assessment # 1. For this assessment you will develop a project management plan, using a suitable methodology for an approved specific topic, producing a plan to a professional standard that applies estimation techniques and the development of a full planning and scheduling process in an approved professional software package.
Conditions of Assessment
This is an individual assessment that you will complete in your learner-managed time, however, your teacher will provide opportunities during class time for clarification and guidance. All work must be completely your own and all literature used must be referenced appropriately using APA 7th edition. In order to pass this course, you must achieve a cumulative grade of at least 50%, across assessments one and two.
Learning Outcome(s) Assessed
- Critically assess project management methodologies and select a suitable methodology for a specific organisational project in the Aotearoa New Zealand context.
- Critically apply estimation techniques and develop planning and scheduling processes to minimise costs and risks for a project.
- Critically analyse the role of project management in achieving successful outcomes for a major project.
Reassessment/Resubmission/Extensions
Please see your course outline for guidelines around reassessment, resubmission, and extensions.
Instructions
To prepare for this assessment you will need to use one of the case studies provided in assessment 1. Your chosen project will need to give you the scope to meet the requirements of this task and must be relevant to an organisation in the Aotearoa New Zealand context
For this assessment you will produce a Project Management Plan and a Microsoft Project Gantt and Network diagram, which together will:
- Critically apply a project management methodology as the basis for your project management plan
- Critically apply estimation techniques and develop planning and scheduling processes to minimise costs and risks for this project.
- Develop a project management plan and a graphical view of your project based on your findings above.
- Critically analyse how the project manager can achieve successful outcomes for a major project, including analysis of how each of the major parts of the plan aid in this success.
- Use contemporary literature to support and justify your recommendations in each part.

Appendix1 Case Studies
Case Studies
- CASE STUDY 1: OPAIC construction school has been using traditional lab space since inception because the construction school has grown bigger, the school needs to put in a purpose-built space on level 8. This space will include a fabrications lab with the use of 3d printing technology as well as a traditional learning space for up to 30 students. Sustainable building practices and green building principles are to be used in the construction of the purpose-built space. Construction is only allowed in the OPAIC holiday periods. The building is owned by an Iwi/M?ori organization which will need consideration.
- CASE STUDY 2: OPAIC want the development of an online project simulation game for the Project Management course. This project should include a project simulation to build a skyscraper in central Auckland with the ability to access the site by a class project team of 3 individuals and a lecturer. It also needs to include real time chat utility as well as video conferencing porta for collaboration. You will also need to include security that works for multiple users and provide online training as part of the project. There also needs to be a repository for past game learning and a page to guide Iwi/M?ori inclusion
- CASE STUDY 3: Collaboration is one important part of OPAIC philosophy, in view of this academic staff at all campuses will get together in one of the 2025 term breaks for a 2-day conference to discuss existing and new programs. OPAIC schedules this event at OPAIC Dunedin campus site. The 2-day event will enable all the schools of study to have separate planning sessions and to come together for sessional talks, including best practice in Iwi/M?ori incorporation. On the second evening, to close the conference a formal dinner is to be provided in Dunedin at a conference venue outside of Otago Polytechnic Te Pukenga with speeches from OP leadership.
