ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION

This assessment meets Unit Learning Outcomes 2 and 3. This assessment meets Course Learning Outcome 7.

The intent of this essay is for students to have the opportunity to integrate the information that has been learnt related to the NSQHS standards. This will allow students to apply knowledge within their current nursing context into future roles and practice environments. The essay will require students to read a Coroners report into the death of a patient, analyse specific NSQHS Standards related to the case and find research to support the NSQHS standards.

HOW TO SUBMIT

You are required to complete this assessment in a Word document and upload your work to LMS for Assessment. If work is submitted in a format that the Unit Coordinator and the Academic Chair cannot access, it will not be marked. Your work will be marked in LMS using the marking rubric.

On submission you will be required to read the student declaration box and confirm that the work submitted was created by yourself.

Please note that Turnitin is a text-matching system designed to compare work submitted by students with other sources from the internet, journals/periodicals, and previous submissions. Its primary purpose is to detect any submitted work that is not original and provide a thorough comparison between the submitted document and the original sources.

After you submit your work, wait to receive your Turnitin report, please note that the report may take several hours to be generated. Use the Turnitin feedback to help with making improvements to your assignment. You should allow extra time to obtain the Turnitin report and act on it. (Do not be alarmed by the high Turnitin percentage if you submit your work multiple times. You can adjust this by viewing the feedback report and un-ticking the previous submission in the Sources list.)You can repeat this process as many times are you wish until the due date.

Use of generative AI for this assignment is recommended. However please generate your original work first and use Copilot (Microsoft) to refine your essay sentence and paragraph structure. You must also state that you have used generative AI in your end text reference list and complete the AI logbook (see LMS for the logbook template).

HOW IT IS ASSESSED (summary)

You will be assessed on these key criteria:

Students will read the Coroners Court of Queensland Findings of Inquest into the death of patient R Blank (a copy of the investigation is on the LMS NUR 355 essay assessment tile). Please note as this essay relates to the death of an Aboriginal patient, this may cause distress to students. Please contact Prue (Unit coordinator) as required for further support.

Students will write a critical essay that focusses on

  • Identifying the specific NSQHS standards (item and action point) of the Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Standard, that were poorly provided for in the case of the deceased.

  • Use current literature that supports the specific item and action points of the Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Standard relevant to the coroners investigation.

Word Count: 2000 words (+/- 10%). Please note that end text references are not included in the word count.

Matrix/rubric and supporting documents: The essay marking matrix, instructions, and Coroners Court of Queensland Findings of Inquest into the death of patient R Blank are on the NUR 355 LMS site Assessment tile.

It is expected that students are to complete the critical essay independently aligned with Murdoch Universities policy on academic integrity. This is NOT a group work activity.

The assessment includes a moderation process to ensure reliable, just, and fair outcomes.

Your assessment outcome will be provided to you via LMS.
