Assessment 2.1: Mini-Viva Due Monday, 9 October 2023, 12:00 PM

Assessment description

This assessment requires you to demonstrate how you would gain consent and palpate respectfully over the pelvis, thigh and knee by making a 5-minute video of yourself. This assessment will help you to prepare the fundamental processes for clinical work by, 1) speaking in plain, easy-to-follow language (layman's terms) throughout the consent process and, 2) explaining in technical anatomical language, how you would palpate the landmark and demonstrate your understanding of further information about the landmark. This assessment is also an excellent stepping stone in the process of preparing for your live VIVA in week 10.

Youll need a well-lit space where you can film yourself palpating your anterior and posterior pelvis, thigh and knee for your assessment. The video will only be seen by academic staff grading it. You may choose whether you sit, stand or lie down during the video. You may wear loose clothing and need not remove any clothing.

When grading your vivawe will assume that you have practiced hand hygieneand we dont need to see you do this on camera.

Youll be asked to:

obtain consentbefore your palpateby facing the camera and explaining what you plan to do in easy to follow, plain language, and ask for consent as if you were with a patient.

position yourself ready for palpation of the landmark of the pelvis, hip, thigh, and knee you have chosen to demonstrate

palpate the landmark, explaining how you locate it using correct technical language as you would with another healthcare professional or colleague

discuss relevant features of the landmark (again using professional anatomical language), please see the below for examples of relevant discussion topics

NOTE: if you discuss another related structure, please show its location when discussing it.

Please look at theMini-Viva marking guide for studentswhen preparing for your assessment. Note: This assessment has two sections of grading. 15% of your grade will be based on your communication of anatomical information, while the remaining 85% will be based on your knowledge of the content (including locating and correctly palpating the feature and discussing other relevant features of this landmark).

Aims

The aim of this assessment is to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of how to prepare for a physical examination with your patient, as well as your knowledge of the anatomical structures covered in the early weeks of the course.

By completing this assessment, you will be able to:

CO4: Use respectful language and behaviour in handling, positioning and palpating friends and family

CO5: Accurately locate and name clinically relevant surface anatomy features (of the pelvis and hip).

Instructions

This assessment requires you to record a video for submission addressing the below requirements. We recommend that you use Zoom to record your video.

1.Setting up

Open Zoom on your computer and ensure your camera and sound settings are correct.

Please place the camera so that you can be seen and heard, and your hands can be seen as you palpate each structure. You may need to move yourself or the camera between the anterior, lateral and posterior structures

Here are examples that clearly show your accuracy.

3867150299656500Beloware examples of camera placement that obscures your palpation, which would not enable you to pass this assessment.

2. Recording the video

In your video recording, ensure you cover the following content:

Demonstrate how you would obtain consent and explain to a volunteer patient what you will do as you palpate for each anatomical feature. In this first video though you will be palpating yourself rather than someone else, so just note out loud what you would say/do if you were palpating a volunteer patient for each feature.NOTE: Well assume that you have performed hand hygiene before you commence, you neednt show yourself washing your hands.

Video yourself palpating a total of four different structures, choosing from those listed in the following table:

Choosetwosurface anatomy features from the pelvis listed below Choosetwosurface anatomy features from the thigh and knee

the iliac crest

the anterior superior iliac spine

the pubic symphysis posterior compartment of the thigh (outline borders)

anterior compartment of the thigh (outline borders)

iliotibial band (ITB)

The video should beno longer than 5 minutes.
