ASSESSMENT 2: INTERVENTION IMPLEMENTATION AND GROUP PRESENTATION

Topic: WORKPLACE BURNOUT

Time: 20-25 minutes

Add enough speakers notes in every slide of presentationTask Description

For Assessment 2, you will complete group and individual tasks that involve choosing and implementing a self-administered positive psychology intervention.

You will:

Choose a self-administered applied positive psychology intervention that all group members want to implement.

Work with your fellow group members to choose at least two specific measurement scales (quantitative approach) to examine the effectiveness of the intervention. You will complete these measurement scales prior to implementing the intervention (pre- intervention) and after you have finished implementing the intervention (post- intervention).

Individually implement the chosen intervention in your own life over a period of 4- 5 weeks

Document your progress, changes, experiences, and challenges in implementing the intervention (this will help you to develop your group presentation).

Presenting results

After the intervention, you will prepare and deliver a 2025-minute group presentation with your group members, where you discuss:

Why did the group choose the specific intervention? That is, what issue or area might the intervention address?

Why did the group choose the specific approach to measure change? Consider the reliability, validity, and suitability of the measures to document change.

How did the group implement the intervention?

Were there any changes reflected in the specific scales or assessment approaches. chosen to examine the interventions effectiveness?

Were there differences between group members in changes experienced during the intervention?

What worked for group members and what were the challenges faced during implementation?

What needs to be considered for use of this positive psychology intervention with individuals or groups in the future?

For each part of the presentation, except for discussing personal changes and challenges faced during the intervention, 1-2 group members will present each section. For example, 1-2 group members will discuss why the specific intervention was chosen. For discussion of personal changes and challenges faced, all group members should provide some discussion of personally experienced changes and challenges.

The time limit of a 2025-minute presentation equates to roughly 5 minutes speaking per presenter.

Choosing a positive psychology intervention

The chosen intervention should be one that is considered to be a positive psychology intervention.

Positive psychology interventions tend to be those:

That are based on positive psychology theories or concepts.

That focus on increasing positive thoughts, feelings, or behaviours, rather than focusing on addressing deficits, problems, symptoms, or disorders.

Where the intended outcome is to improve wellbeing and/or related concepts such as happiness, life satisfaction, and flourishing.

Remember that wellbeing or flourishing are multidimensional. If we use PERMA as an example, higher wellbeing or flourishing includes factors such as experiencing positive emotions, engagement, satisfying relationships, deriving meaning in life, and accomplishing goals. Some interventions may predominantly focus on one aspect of wellbeing (e.g., increasing positive emotions), whilst others will address multiple (e.g., increasing positive emotions and addressing relationships). You can choose an intervention that is more specific or one that attempts to address multiple aspects of wellbeing. While researching a suitable intervention, you will notice that in addition to seeing the term positive psychology interventions, you might also see positive psychology exercises or even positive psychology activities. For the purposes of this unit, consider interventions, exercises, or activities as largely interchangeable that is, so long as the chosen intervention/exercise/activity is positive psychology-based, you can use it. The intervention/exercise must be one that can be self-administered (e.g., by reading instructions, listening to a pre-record audio).

Some of the positive psychology interventions/exercises/activities that you will be familiar with or may have used include:

mindfulness

gratitude

self-compassion, compassion, or empathy

optimism and hope based interventions.

character strengths building

meaning based interventions/exercises.

savouringWhen choosing an intervention, consider what it sets out to achieve (i.e., what is it trying to increase or improve?) and how this might benefit group members.

As a starting point to find a positive psychology intervention for your assessment, we recommend you look through:

Positive psychology textbooks

Positive psychology and wellbeing websites (e.g., PositivePsychology.com)

The homepages of positive psychology researchers or their lists of publications (e.g., by searching for the researcher in Google Scholar). While the actual exercises might not be in these publications, once you find out the name of the exercise, you should be able to search online for a copy of the exercise.

Implementing the intervention

While you are using pre-existing interventions/exercises/activities, your group will need to consider the design and implementation of your overall project.

Some ways to design and implement your project include:

Choose an area (e.g., gratitude) and implement a series of different exercises (e.g., gratitude journal, gratitude letter, gratitude jar) over the 45-week period (e.g., one exercise per week).

Choose an area and implement the same exercise for the duration of the 4-5 weeks.

Choose a suite of exercises (e.g., gratitude exercise, self-compassion exercise, empathy exercise) that have a shared aim (e.g., improved relationships) and implement these over the 45-week period (e.g., one exercise per week).

In deciding on how to implement you chosen intervention, consider factors such as:

What does the literature say about a good amount of time for which to use an exercise? Please note that many exercises are recommended to be practiced over a longer period than you will it is perfectly suitable to use these for your assessment, acknowledging in your presentation that stronger effects might occur the longer one uses the intervention.

How many times a day/week is it recommended to practice the exercise?

Ability to implement e.g., if your group are particularly busy, you might reduce number of times per week you carry out the exercise.

Good implementation principles (e.g., reducing boredom through not repeating the same exercise again and again).

individual reflections:

A document outlining your contributions to the intervention. This may be in the form of a document (no more than 1 A4 page) with a series of bullet points outlining your contribution. You may also include the presentation slides to indicate what parts of the presentation you worked on.

An individual reflection (maximum of 200 words +/- 10% for the reflection) of how you felt the group work and presentation went.
