Context

One of the most critical strategies for understanding the impact of global and local environmental health issues is to critically analyse the factors that lead to the problem. The DPSEEA (Driving forces, pressures, state, exposures, effects, actions) framework was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to establish and analyse the cause-to- effect chain of environmental issues. The DPSEEA framework enables the analysis of each factor that impacts the health of a given population (WHO, 1999).

The DPSEEA was designed to support actions to reduce the burden of disease linked to environmental health issues and to improve communication between key stakeholders. By completing this assessment, the student will learn and understand the importance of establishing the structural drivers of environmental health issues and their causal relationship. Critical analysis of these factors allows for a clear understanding of the nature of the health crisis and the potential gaps in policy, procedure and legislation that trigger it.

Task:

Write a report using the Driving Forces, Pressures, States, Exposures, Effects and Actions (DPSEEA) framework to analyse the impact of an environmental health issue in a specific region. Describe the links between cause and effect and develop actions to target the chosen issue. Please follow the task instructions below.

Instructions:

From the options provided by your lecturer, you will:

  1. Select one environmental health issue

  1. Select a region, country and/or city

WHO DPSEEA framework link:

World Health Organization. (2002). Health in sustainable development planning: the role of indicators (No. WHO/HDE/HID/02.11, pp 105-120). World Health Organization. https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/67391/WHO_HDE_HID_02.11.pdf

Use the template provided to write a report based on the environmental health issue impacting your chosen region. Address the following key points:

  • Explain the links and describe the Driving forces, Pressures, State changes, Exposures, Effects, and current Actions relevant to the impact of the environmental health issue in the chosen region.

  • Identify and describe any vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the problem.

  • Research and discuss the gaps in management and legislation in different sectors (Government and non-government) that triggered or led to the environmental health issue in the chosen region (based on your framework investigation).

  • What is the role of existing health agencies, other agencies, and other key stakeholders, including (e.g. community groups, non-government organisations and/or critical infrastructure addressing the environmental health issue? Include the names and specific roles.

  • Based on your findings, review and analyse the literature related to the environmental health issue and propose 3 or 4 evidence-based recommendations addressing the gaps in current policy, regulation, and management in your chosen region.

  • Include at least ten academic-acceptable references and the evidence of the literature search.

From the table provided by your lecturer, select ONE environmental health issue in ONE region. Write a report on the environmental health issue impacting the specified region, addressing the following key points:

Note: Erase the instructions in blue in your final document. Keep the headings (bold). Add subheadings (optional)

(Include the title of your report)
