Assessment Task 3: Visual Analytics
Purpose:
This assignment aims to ensure that you understand a large variety of Australian International Trade datasets and data types. You will learn data statistical and analytical patterns and use different visualisation techniques to present these patterns and uncover data stories inside the dataset.
Task:
You will be writing a report targeted at individuals within public policy circles or government, to summarise key findings about Australian trade data. You will look at over 35 years of trade data in a variety of analysis patterns.
The detailed requirements are to:
- Create the analytical and statistical patterns in Excel and import them into Tableau
- Create visualisations that analyse All Maincategories, the raw dollar value trends, analytical trends and statistical trends
- Analyse the relationship between the main category and subcategories, identifying major trends and change points, and explain what may have caused the trends you've observed, both from within the data you've been given and from research outside of the data
- Focus onONEsubcategory and create one or more dashboards looking into the trends, insights and relationships between another subcategory.
- Create a storyboard that summarises the story about your category and subcategories
- Write a report explaining what you have found in your data visualisation process, describing the graphical techniques used, highlighting trends and outliers, analysing why they may have occurred with a focus on your selected category and subcategories, and concluding with recommendations about the industries selected and a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of the dashboard and storyboard methodologies.
Submission:
The submission should contain three files:
- A report in PDF format, with the formatpdf
- The Excel file you have used (regardless of whether it has been edited or not), with the formatxlsx
- The Tableau workbook that you used, saved as a packaged Tableau file, with the formattwbx
Note that saving in the packaged format should save the data along with the Tableau file, so we don't need to link it to your Excel workbook
The report has a page limit of 20 pages, including graphs.
Penalties:
Work submitted late without an approved extension is subject to a late penalty of10 per centof the total available marks deducted per calendar day that the assessment is overdue (e.g. if an assignment is out of 40 marks, and is submitted (up to) 24 hours after the deadline without an extension, the student will have four marks deducted from their awarded mark). Work submittedafter five calendar days is not acceptedand a mark of zero is awarded.
Each page beyond the page limit will result inone markdeduction.
